Χείρα Βοηθείας - reviews and plans
13.4.2015
Our first set of Accounts of Χείρα Βοηθείας as a Somateio has been finalised and is now in the hands of our Accountant, Mr. George Atsalakis. He guided us through the preparation of the paperwork and will advise us when the process is complete. We want to publicly acknowledge his support, which means Χείρα Βοηθείας is able to operate on a legal basis which is completely transparent. Mr. Atsalakis provides this service without charge which means all the money we raise – which you donate – can be spent directly to help those in need in Apokoronas.
Our New Projects
Our first practical projects for Easter 2015 were very successful. In close consultation with Father Mihaelis and Demetra of the Agia Sofia Foundation, Χείρα Βοηθείας provided 600€ to buy pairs of new trainers for 30 children in need. This, it turns out, had great resonance among the Greek Community, many of whom can remember a time when people did not have shoes. It is an important reminder of the fact that our work must be guided by local people who understand their communities. We were delighted to see in Haniotika Nea, on 9th April, a Notice placed by Agia Sofia, thanking Χείρα Βοηθείας for the shoes and wishing us “Happy Easter”!
The other initiative was to provide nappies and baby food for a family in which the mother is on her own.
These practical projects build on our 3 years of experience and efforts to “take a bit of the pressure off” families in need in Apokoronas.
We plan further discussions with Agia Sofia to prepare for the new school year in September. We need to be able to identify the material needs of the children and young people at each stage of education, so that they are ready and able to fully grasp the opportunity Education offers.
Which brings us back to … money!
The New Shoes Project was fully funded by the generosity of our supporters, especially those making donations in recognition of John McKenna’s efforts in the Theriso Half Marathon.
The Baby Support Project costs 71€ each month for each family. If 3 people pledge 25€ a month, problem solved. We are discussing ways to extend the project but it depends on money. We are very wary of raising expectations that cannot be met. Consistent support that they can rely on is what people need.
To fund the other work like the new shoes and the school materials, we will come to you with specific costed proposals to get your financial backing.
As the summer begins, the Steering Group of Χείρα Βοηθείας is confident we will continue, with your support, to do what we can to make a difference in Apokoronas.

Χείρα Βοηθείας responds
20.3.2015
Χείρα Βοηθείας undertook this distribution, not because it wishes to compete with the Municipality’s Social Supermarket. On the other hand, neither are we prepared, in silence, to provide a safety net for those in need who are being failed by a flawed Municipal Council Social Services’ approach to these matters.
For 3 years Χείρα Βοηθείας has been providing support to ALL the families in Apokoronas who are in dire straits. From the earliest signs that the Municipal Authority of Mayor Koukianakis intended to take over the food bag distribution, we have been concerned that the Social Supermarket Programme might not reach non-EU Citizens and their families who are in need of support.
While we accept that the consequences of imposing conditions on these families may have been unintended, nevertheless, the outcome i.e. no food support for some of our most vulnerable residents, runs the risk of being seen as discriminatory. Such a perception might make the involvement of many genuinely concerned people problematic.
Despite repeated assurances from Argyro Benaki, President of Social Services, her deputy, Niki Niolaki and others, that none of the EU Regulations would be allowed to prevent all those resident in Apokoronas who are in need from getting support, closer examination of the criteria of entitlement suggested that this would be the case.
For example, the Council Resolution setting up the Social Supermarket sets out the financial criteria which must be met, before other criteria such as family size, disability and employment status are considered.
The financial criteria range from an annual income of less than 6,000€ for a single person to an annual income of less than 13,000€ for a family with 5 members. Leaving aside the validity of these figures, it is necessary for people to know that for People from Third Countries (i.e. non-E.U. Citizens) to qualify for a Residence Permit, they must prove a minimum income of ……13,000€. Failure by an Albanian person, for example, to produce a Tax Return showing a gross income of at least 13,000€ renders them liable to repatriation. So if the criteria of entitlement are enforced there are two possible outcomes for the Albanian applicant. Either they have less than 13,000€ income per year in which case they can be expelled from Greece, or they have 13,000€, in which case they don’t qualify as being in need.
It was with this in mind and our awareness of a general reluctance, among Greeks and Non-Greeks alike, to provide paperwork and become embroiled in the bureaucracy of the Greek State, that we approached the Municipality, to discuss the inclusion in the Social Supermarket distribution of 22 Albanian and Bulgarian families from Χείρα Βοηθείας’ list.
On Thursday 19th February 2015, Jo Taylor and I met with Argyro Benaki, President of Social Services and her deputy, Niki Niolaki. At that meeting, they agreed to include the 22 families in the next distribution on March 10th. We were assured that no papers would be required of them. The criteria would not be applied to them.
On Wednesday 25th February, we were told that Mrs. Benaki had stated publicly that “Χείρα Βοηθείας no longer wants to help these 22 families” but she would include them on the Social Supermarket list if they submitted their names and photocopies of their passports. After we questioned the accuracy of her recollection of the outcome of our meeting, Mrs. Benaki finally agreed to accept a simple list of names with the number of children in each family. We provided this immediately, via Helen Peters.
However, late afternoon on Friday 6th. March we were informed that these 22 families would NOT be included in the distribution on Friday 13th March.
In order to confirm this information, Pete Sheppard went to the Town Hall in Vrysses on Monday 9th March to speak with Mrs Benaki. With an interpreter to avoid any miscommunication, he asked her why the 22 families were not being included in the distribution scheduled for Friday 13th March. First, she told him they did not need food this time because Χείρα Βοηθείας had given them food only 2 weeks ago. He corrected her by telling her that we had given food to the 22 families on 5th February, which meant that by Friday 13th March just over 5 weeks would have elapsed.
She then said that they did not have enough food to include the 22 families this time. I reminded her of the 30,000€ she had reported to us as being in the coffers of the Social Supermarket. Instead of answering this point, she simply said it would be “alright at Easter”.
This created a problem for Χείρα Βοηθείας. We felt duty bound to respond to the needs of these families. Families have come to rely on the food bags being distributed regularly. So we took the decision to provide food bags for the 22 families on Thursday 19th March. We would like to record publicly our gratitude to Crete Island Estates for their swift response to our request for financial assistance with this.
We acknowledge the involvement and important contribution of many members of the English-speaking community, including the leadership of the Anglican Church, in the vital work of the Social Supermarket. We trust that they will take every opportunity to ensure that all possible steps are taken to prevent any discrimination, direct or indirect against any section of our community.

Χείρα Βοηθείας – the next phase
February 2015
Introduction
We congratulate the Municipality’s Social Supermarket on its first food distribution in January. We understand that village priests gave out 724 bags of non-perishable and fresh food to 362 families of which 100 were registered.
We are pleased to be able to say that the baton of food distribution appears to have been successfully passed on.
In January, Χείρα Βοηθείας itself prepared 22 food bags for distribution to Albanian and Bulgarian families. These families have indicated that they do not wish to be formally registered. We have now been reassured that neither formal registration nor compliance with the official criteria is necessary. We have been told that there is no obstacle to these families receiving support from the Municipality’s Social Supermarket. Therefore, we are in the process of arranging for them to be included in the Social Supermarket’s February distribution.
This means that the resources and energies of our members and supporters are freed up to develop a new project.
As agreed at the General Assembly on 20th January 2015, the extended Steering Group invited suggestions for future projects and has discussed a possible future direction with a view to making a proposal for endorsement by a re-called General Assembly of the Somateio.
The Proposal
The proposal is to focus on Education. In line with our Constitution, Χείρα Βοηθείας will focus on individual children in need NOT on schools. In this way, we can remain faithful to the Somateio’s Purpose without encroaching on or duplicating the charitable work of others. Our concern to help overcome social exclusion will mean that our work will complement the initiatives of the Municipal Council and avoid any suggestion of competition.
In preparation for the discussion at the re-called General Assembly on February 13th, we talked with the Director and Staff of the Agia Sofia Foundation and secured their commitment to work in partnership with us. In practical terms, the pilot phase of the new project will involve 10 families from the Agia Sofia list, each of which has children and young people across the age range. Our first effort will be at Easter 2015. Parental involvement and a detailed analysis of practical needs as well as the smooth functioning of the partnership will be our key objectives.
In the medium and longer term, using the experience of the pilot scheme, we propose to develop a project drawing on the Scandinavian idea of Boxes for Babies, in association with the Attica-based BookWave project, possibly as an official affiliate of the UK-based BookStart initiative.
We propose to name the project “Breaking the Cycle”. Some background thinking is set out below:
Breaking the Cycle
The Purpose
To support the educational performance of children in need in Apokoronas and to help combat their social exclusion.
Background Thinking
Poverty has negative effects on children – effects which are pervasive and persist over time. Poor children tend to have poor children. Research has shown that educational achievement can make a significant contribution to breaking this “cycle of poverty”.
Research indicates that children who live below the poverty line over many years suffer the worst outcomes. Children who experience poverty during their pre-school and early school years have lower rates of completion of school education. Interventions during early childhood can be the most important in reducing poverty’s impact on children.
It is well documented that poverty decreases a child’s readiness for school.
Below we present a framework within which Χείρα Βοηθείας will consider possible interventions to “Break the Cycle”.
Accessibility
· Addressing obstacles / deficits that impact on a child’s ability to approach school ready to integrate into school life
Extra Curricula
· Enabling access to in-school and out-of-school activities that broaden experience, build confidence, help integration with peers
School Performance
· Ensuring the child has equipment, materials, sustenance and support
Emotional Health
· Fostering feelings of self-esteem and social inclusion

The Background
Draft Council Resolution to operate the Social Supermarket
Summary of Draft Council Resolution
Apokoronas Council takes over food distribution
15.12.2014
It is a matter of great regret that we have to acknowledge that we have reached a parting of the ways with the Municipal Authority of Mayor Charalambos Koukianakis.
Despite our persistent efforts to develop a dialogue and co-operation with the new Municipal Authority of Apokoronas, it is now clear that the Municipality has a fundamentally different approach to the distribution of food to those in need in Apokoronas.
Our Christmas distribution – the largest one yet, reaching out to support 308 families which include more than 400 children – will be our last.
With immediate effect we are temporarily suspending all fund-raising activities and re-calling the Red Boxes.
Χείρα Βοηθείας has worked for the last 2½ years to provide food bags to support all those in need in Apokoronas. We have raised money from supporters and encouraged people to donate items of food, using the Red Boxes we have placed in shops across the Municipality.
The new Municipal Authority of Mayor Charalambos Koukianakis has decided on a different approach.
Whereas we provided food bags containing non-perishable goods every 6 weeks, the Municipality has decided to include fresh meat, fruit etc and to do so every month.
We do not have the financial or human resources to do this.
We have also voiced our concerns about supplying fresh produce which has to be stored at specific temperatures and under specific conditions. The health and safety issues are an onerous responsibility we will not shoulder.
The Municipality is in the process of establishing a Social Supermarket. They are organising food collections and seeking large food donations from businesses and supermarkets in Apokoronas and in Chania. They intend to incorporate the distribution of EU surpluses into their plan.
All of this calls into question the role and contribution of Χείρα Βοηθείας.
Disappointingly, the Municipal Councillors responsible, without discussion or consultation, insisted on putting two leaflets in the 308 Food Bags our volunteers had prepared for the Christmas distribution. One was a leaflet clearly designed to give the impression that the food bag was a gift from the Municipality. There was no mention of Χείρα Βοηθείας.
The second was a scrap of paper. This set out the criteria and documentary evidence people must produce, in order to be considered as qualified to continue receiving the food bags we have been providing up until now.
If Papers, ID Numbers, Tax Returns etc are required in order to “qualify” for a food bag, this may deter people from seeking the support they need. People who are uninsured and those wary of contact with the Greek State may not ask for help for themselves and their children.
For these reasons we will not use the EU Criteria. Moreover, the distribution of EU surpluses (the pasta mountain, the cheese mountain, the olive oil lake etc.) is by law restricted to EU Citizens. Such an approach contravenes Article 3 of our Constitution which states that our purpose is to support all residents in Apokoronas who are in need.
Χείρα Βοηθείας is supported by all nationalities living in Apokoronas. We support all those in need, irrespective of their country of origin.
There has been no opportunity to have a sensible discussion with representatives of the Council about any of these issues.
We wish Mayor Koukianakis and his supporters every success in building on the very firm foundations Χείρα Βοηθείας and its friends and supporters have laid, with the consistent support and encouragement of the former Mayor of Apokoronas, Grigoris Markakis and Bishop Damaskinos, the Most Reverend Metropolitan Bishop of Kydonias & Apokoronas.
We are tremendously grateful to all those who have supported the Food Bag Programme with their money, their time and their energies. All those involved in Χείρα Βοηθείας can feel a great sense of satisfaction that the current Mayor and his team are following our example with such enthusiasm.
In the New Year we will be convening a meeting of the members of Χείρα Βοηθείας to discuss the future of the organisation and to explore new projects that can build on our work and experience, and consolidate the broad support we have across the communities of Apokoronas, so that Χείρα Βοηθείας can continue to make a significant contribution to supporting all those in need in Apokoronas.

On Sunday morning, nearly 50 people divided into 13 teams meandered around the streets of Vamos looking for clues! Some had more luck than others but in a very close contest the winning team was Richard and Barbara Johnson and David and Nancy Moon (pictured above). Thanks to Dimitri from the Cotton Club in Georgioupolis for donating the prize : a meal for four. Following the Hunt, lunch was eaten at the Marouvas Taverna in Vamos with thanks also to Manolis for a splendid lunch which also included a donation to Χείρα Βοηθείας.
I think we achieved two things!! Firstly everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and secondly we raised exactly 300 euros. So many thanks to everyone who took part and those who helped to make it a success.

A new Social Services Committee for Apokoronas
5.11.14
The Council Chamber was packed. Large numbers of village priests, Community Representatives, and representatives from Cultural Associations across the Municipality had all responded to the call by Mayor Charalambos Koukianakis.
In his brief introduction, Mr. Koukianakis proposed the establishment of a new Social Services Committee representing the Municipal Authority, the Orthodox Church and the Cultural Associations of Apokoronas. He went on to invite Χείρα Βοηθείας to participate. Although this was indeed a great honour and represented an important recognition of our work, it was not felt to be appropriate for us to get involved at that level.
Father Mihaelis (President of the Agia Sofia Foundation), Argyro Benaki (President of Κοινοφελης Επιχειρηση / Municipal Social Services), Vasiliki Belesiotou (Cultural Association of Kokkino Horio) and Anastasia Fronimaki (Cultural Association of Gavalohori) were duly elected.
Father Mihaelis will chair the new Committee.
The discussion that followed focussed on the work of Χείρα Βοηθείας. The need to involve more local priests and village representatives in the distribution of the food bags was emphasised. The thorny issue of criteria for qualifying for support was discussed and referred to the Committee for further consideration. I took the opportunity to re-iterate our commitment to strengthen ties with local communities and the Church. I said that we must all work together – separate activity restricted to one’s own village should be discouraged. I indicated that each distribution of food bags costs getting on for 3,000€. My inability to translate – “and money doesn’t grow on trees” into Greek caused some amusement but the point was made.
The outcome of the meeting was that all villages are tasked with producing within two weeks a list of families and individuals with health and/or poverty related issues.
In a subsequent discussion with Argyro Benaki and Niki Niolaki, it was agreed that Χείρα Βοηθείας would sit with the new Committee when the new lists are ready.
This represents a very important stage in the development of Χείρα Βοηθείας. Significant at the meeting was the widespread understanding and appreciation of what we do. Coupled with a genuine interest in involving us at the heart of the Municipality’s social services work, this is an opportunity we are determined to grasp with both hands.
264 Bags packed and ready to go!
30.10.14
The food was delivered promptly and unloaded with great efficiency so we were all ready by 10.am. The whole operation was completed almost within the hour. After a bit of tidying up – boxes etc gathered up for re-cycling – we readily accepted the Nippos Women’s invitation to coffee, biscuits and homemade sweets.
Tomorrow, Friday, is Distribution Day. New and old Community Representatives, Village Priests, Staff from Βοηθεία Στο Σπίτι and Άγια Σοφία will collect the bags and start the distribution throughout Apokoronas.
Once again, a big “Thank you” goes to all who helped – by regularly sponsoring a bag, by putting items in the Red Boxes when they are out shopping, by raising money through events, with their time and energies. Every contribution counts!

This is how we will act in Opposition
24.9.2014
Mr. Sgourakis said:
“Dear Colleagues, we welcome you today at the beginning of a new Municipal Term and wish our municipality and its citizens well so that, all together, we can deal with the difficult task ahead of us.
Certainly we cannot fail to mention the unpleasant fact that our 27-member Council has only 26 members. Responsible for this fact is not just the electoral law but also that Combination which ignored its regulations with the results we all know about. And, because in these coming days no-one can be seen as surplus to requirements, we believe that the absence of Mr. Stelios Michelakis, who unjustly was not elected, really will be felt by all and of course by our own Municipal Combination which lost the seat.
We know the difficulties of the times but we know very well indeed that the new Municipal Authority starts from a position:
-Having a service structure which certainly needs strengthening and improving
-Without Debts - with cash balances of more than 2.500.000€ with a positive bank balance after payment of liabilities that will exceed 1.500.000€
-With Projects in the pipeline – most of them already underway, such as :
• The Sewerage System in Georgioupolis and the wider area
• The Regeneration of the settlements : Asi Gonia, Fres, Vafes, Kournas, Emprosneros, Gavalochori, Vamos, Kokkino Horio, Stylos, Plaka, Georgioupolis.
• Water Projects related to networks and reservoir tanks.
• The Energy-upgrade of the schools of Gavalochori, Fres, Vamos, Embrosneros.
• Works on the municipal and provincial roads.
This inheritance must be built on for the benefit of the Citizen of Apokoronas.
From the position of the major Opposition, we will fight:
-For a Municipal Council where opinions and dialogue are respected, where it is possible to take correct decisions.
-For the support of working people with respect for their labour rights. We will stand side by side with them and we will always be open to any discussion with them.
-For the implementation, without deviations and delays, of the projects initiated by the previous Municipal Authority.
-For new projects to be designed and integrated into programmes according to the needs and priorities of the Municipality. We have the knowledge, experience and the plan to enable us to submit specific proposals for:
• The management of water resources
• The inclusion of a municipal sewage treatment unit in the area of Vamos - Armenoi
• The land-use and urban planning of the Municipality
• The support of social structures
• The protection of the coastline
• The improvement of the infrastructure
These are the pillars of our proposals and our main objectives.
We will stand in the way of any attempt to squander the resources of the Municipality and we will continue to work for a financially sound Municipality.
We will block any attempt to serve private interests.
We will support any effort to secure resources and projects, and in this we will be on the side of the Municipal Authority as long as it makes that effort.
Finally, We want to stress that it is time to lower the tone of voice and bring words and actions down to earth. The Municipal Authorities have continuity. We pray that the report you will make at the end of 5 years, will show a positive outcome for the good of the area and its citizens.”

Today was
Distribution Day
for Χείρα Βοηθείας
19.9.2014
With the adminstrative support of the Social Services Offices in Vrysses, the new Municipal Authority demonstrated its commitment to continue Council support for our efforts.
Community Representatives from Embrosneros, Kokkino Horio, Vamos, Nippos, Sellia, Vafes, Gavalohori, Plaka, Kournas, Georgioupolis, and Kefalas - re-elected and newly elected - and Father Manolis from Vrysses, all joined Staff from Boithia Sto Spiti and Agia Sofia to collect their large, medium and small bags and their list of recipients.
Altogether 263 Food Bags had been assembled. Within 3 hours all had been collected and the Food Bank again bare! We distributed information about the work of Χείρα Βοηθείας to the new Community Representatives [Topikoi] to build on the work we have begun with the new administration to ensure their understanding of our work and to secure their continuing support.
All in all a very positive backdrop to next week's meeting of the Founding Members of the Χείρα Βοηθείας Somateio called to plan our work over the next few months.
Χείρα Βοηθείας - 263 Food Bags Packed
11.9.2014
We are getting used to the prompt delivery of the food and other essential items by Aki’s staff. Soon after 10 am we were all set. Just an hour later, 263 Bags – 68 Large Bags for families with 3 or more children, 87 Medium Bags for families with 1 or 2 children and 108 Small Bags for couples or people living on their own – were ready.
When we had finished – the empty boxes consigned to the nearest Blue Bin for re-cycling - we went to the kafeneion opposite for much appreciated refreshment to drink coffee and lemonade at the invitation of the Women’s Syllogos. This gave an important social aspect to the work we had done. Importantly, those new to the packing had been given the chance to see the scale of the distribution operation – an opportunity they greatly enjoyed. All these things contribute to a strong team able to spread the word about the work of Χείρα Βοηθείας and deal effectively with questions and misunderstandings.
We were joined for coffee by Mrs. Argyro Benaki, the newly elected President of Social Services. We had invited her to meet some of the volunteers involved in Χείρα Βοηθείας and to deepen her understanding of our work. She was already fully aware of the project and asked well-informed questions about the system of delivery and about our views on confidentiality and respect for the privacy of the recipients of the food bags. In response to a direct question about the new Council’s continuation of the Municipality’s support for Χείρα Βοηθείας, she left us in no doubt that she will do all that she can to enable us to strengthen and extend our work. She made clear her commitment to the continuity of what she obviously regards as an important initiative. She expressed an interest in further more detailed discussions.
So, all in all, it was a very successful morning’s work! Well done, everyone!
Our Support is needed!

A Welcome Boost for Χείρα Βοηθείας

Georgioupolis Square Concert
- a tremendous success!
The build up to the event had been disconcertingly smooth. Poster teams had displayed posters in English, Greek, German and Russian along the major routes into Georgioupolis and in the village itself. Leaflets, again in the four languages, had been distributed to the visitors on the preceding evenings.
The Municipality had provided the stage and its staff had duly constructed it at one end of the nearly completed new square. We were all set – or so we thought!
As the Collecting Team started to gather, the only problem we faced seemed to be a lack of an electricity supply!!!! Of course, every problem is only really a challenge in disguise and it took Councillor Nikos Kokolakis only about 5 minutes to solve it.
The Tavernas brought out their tables and chairs onto the square and we could see the place beginning to fill up.
The concert started with what are fast becoming our old friends Giorgos (Lyre), Manolis (Lute) and Charalambos (Lute). They set the scene with traditional Cretan music before moving into providing a musical accompaniment to the traditional dancing of the Junior - some very junior – Akrites, a local dance troupe organised and inspired by Pantelis Kaparoudakis (of Nippos).
This was our cue to begin the collection of money to support the work of Χείρα Βοηθείας. This is one of our core fund-raising events and its success is vital if we are to provide the support the many families in Apokoronas need. Every time we are anxious – will people give? Will they understand the reason behind the entertainment?
This year we had some enthusiastic new members of the Collecting Team (as well as the old hands!). As usual there was no need to be concerned. By the end of the evening we all had stories to tell of people’s generosity – people from all over Europe – keen to help.
The traditional Cretan music was the first half, Carl Axon the second. With a pretty sharp change in the tempo we were very soon into a rip-roaring rock gig! Carl took every opportunity to remind the audience of the importance of filling our collecting tins. We collected, people danced, Carl and the band played.
When the dust had settled – that is the next day, we counted up and found that Χείρα Βοηθείας had netted a magnificent 1,379.73€ (plus two US Dimes, 6p and 1 Rouble)!
Footnote:
This seems an appropriate moment, when the life of this Municipal Council is coming to an end, to record publicly our thanks and appreciation to those Councillors who have supported our work. In particular, we thank Grigoris Markakis, the retiring Mayor, who presided over the founding of Χείρα Βοηθείας; Petros Vagionakis, outgoing President of the Social Services Department for his continuous support; Outgoing Vice-Mayor, Manolis Nikoloudis for his encouragement and support; Councillors Nikos Kokolakis and Manousos Kapridakis for their practical assistance. Sifis Stavroulakis, outgoing Vice-Mayor of Georgioupolis, deserves special mention for his commitment to our work and his personal, political, practical and financial support at every turn.
We now look forward to building a positive and effective relationship with the administration of the newly elected Mayor of Apokoronas, Charalambos Koukianakis. We are confident that from September when the new Council takes office, Χείρα Βοηθείας will continue to build so that we can provide support to all those in need in our Municipality.

Χείρα Βοηθείας Food Distribution Completed!
Community Representatives, Staff from the Municipality's Boithia Sto Spiti Programme and Staff from the Agia Sofia Foundation came to collect their bags for delivery.
Most satisfying was that by the end of the morning every bag had been collected - a testament to the skills of our own Packing Team! The Food Bank was almost completely bare - awaiting our renewed efforts in preparation for the next distribution in September.
Some collecting the bags did express concern that the change in the Council might mean that our work would stop. We were able to reassure them that no matter what happens Χείρα Βοηθείας is determined to continue our efforts to support all those in need in Apokoronas.
There may be a period of instability and uncertaintly ahead as we must build new relationships with the new Mayor, Councillors and Community Representatives. Nevertheless, renewed impetus on the Red Box project and the determined effort to increase the Sponsor A Bag Programme from 640 euros to 1,000 euros every 6 weeks should see us through.
Making the Carl Axon Concert in Geogioupolis Square on Thursday August 7th a success is the first step! If you can help, get in touch on 6943683064.
Summer Cultural Programme 2014
Municipality of Apokoronas
is published here Πρόγραμμα εκδηλώσεων
Last Packing Day for the Summer
... and now for some serious fund-raising
Success depends on having a strong team of collectors “shaking the tin” – please volunteer if you can.
Then, of course, our efforts to increase the income from the Sponsor A Bag Programme continues. We have already received pledges taking our total from 640€ to 695€. We need pledges worth 310€ to take us to our 1000€ target! Please help if you can.
Kokkino Horio celebrates Zorba
"There is to be a showing of the film Zorba the Greek in Kokkino Horio on WEDNESDAY 30TH JULY.
The film as most of you know was shot 50 years ago this year, partly in Kokkino Horio and partly near Stavros on the Akrotiri.
The new Syllogos of St. Peter and St. Paul is organising the showing to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the film.
The event begins at 20.30 with some presentations by one of the villagers and someone from Chania to do with the Nikos Kazantsakis (who wrote the book) 'fan club'. Then there will be a short (10 minutes maximum!) powerpoint presentation by Bob Scott, showing pictures of those who were 'extras' in film as they are now (or at least, within the last 17 years!). The film itself is expected to begin around 2130 in the evening when it will be dark enough - the event is to be staged in the new square at Kokkino Horio. Apparently there will be an opportunity to buy refreshments from a kiosk in the square.
A nominal charge (we think about €1) will be made to cover the cost of publicity and also hopefully raise a bit of money for the new syllogos. Please do your best to support the event."
A Helping Hand
SPONSOR A FOOD BAG
Statements in the Press that the crisis in Greece is over are premature. Currently, in Apokoronas, 256 families including about 400 children rely on Χείρα Βοηθείας for support.
Our urgent need is to put our finances on a stable and more predictable footing. Key to this is the Sponsor A Bag Programme. Every 6 weeks, supporters of Χείρα Βοηθείας pledge a regular donation of 25€, 20€ or 15€ to pay for a Family Food Bag.
Can you make a pledge?
So far 640€ has been pledged every 6 weeks. We have now set ourselves the target of making this 1000€.
That means we need 15 new pledges of 25€, 18 of 20€ or 24 of 15€ …. Or any combination!
It means that for the cost of a couple of cups of coffee a week or for less than the cost of a meal for 2, you can help make a real difference.
Please email [email protected] with your pledge.

Θα Υιοθετήσετε κι εσείς μια τσάντα με τρόφιμα;
Μπορείς να κάνεις εσύ μια υπόσχεση;

Χείρα Βοηθείας meets the Mayor-Elect to discuss the future
In the letter, we requested the opportunity to meet with him to discuss the new Council’s future support for our work.
The meeting between Pete Sheppard and Mr. Koukianakis took place at the former Town Hall of Armenoi in Kalyves on Friday.
It was explained how important continuity and stability is to the success of the work. Residents need to know that Χείρα Βοηθείας will continue to receive the full support of the Mayor and the Municipal Authority of Apokoronas.
Mr. Koukianakis proceeded to outline his proposals for the future of the work of social solidarity here in Apokoronas. He described his plan for a comprehensive alignment of professional and voluntary organisations – the Help in the Home Programmes, the Orthodox Church, Χείρα Βοηθείας, Community Representatives (Topikoi), Village Priests, the Cultural Associations – all working together. Soon after his inauguration as Mayor in September, a meeting will be called, under the chairpersonship of the Vice-Mayor responsible, in order to discuss the way forward.
He further emphasised that the Election campaign was a thing of the past. People from all the Combinations and from none of them, would need to work together for the good of the Municipality.
Pete Sheppard welcomed this perspective which holds out the prospect of ever deepening links between Χείρα Βοηθείας and the wider community.
Preparing for the next Food Distribution
Jo has produced her report of Χείρα Βοηθείας’ shopping needs as we prepare for the next distribution of Food Bags scheduled for later in July.
This followed the “count-up” of all the items collected using the Red Boxes placed in over 20 Supermarkets, MiniMarkets and Hotels throughout Apokoronas.
Jo’s report clearly shows the continuing importance of the Red Boxes – more than 20% of our total needs are met by people buying an extra item of non-perishable food and placing it in the Red Box when they are out shopping.
As always there is scope for improvement!
Please check to see if there is a Red Box where you shop. Would your local shopkeeper take a Red Box? Local organisations, the Syllogos, the football team – have arranged events where the “entrance fee” is food for Χείρα Βοηθείας. Is that something you could suggest your group could do?
Please remind your friends and neighbours about the Red Boxes!
We are focussing on food staples. These are the items we would like people to put in the Red Boxes. Unfortunately due to current distribution arrangements over which we have no control, we cannot deal with fresh food. We hope to free up a few euros by providing these items so that families can buy fresh fruit and vegetables themselves.
Each week, volunteers empty the Red Boxes and take the things to their local Town Hall so they can be transferred to the Food Bank in Nippos.
But the system needs co-ordinating. More Red Boxes need to be deployed – in the hotels of Almyrida and Georgioupolis for example so that visitors have the opportunity to contribute. Volunteers need support. Cover for holidays and sickness needs to be arranged. Is that a job you could do?
Press statements suggest that the economic crisis in Greece is over. That seems to us premature. Currently, 259 families rely on the support of Χείρα Βοηθείας – that includes nearly 400 children. Each of us needs to do what we can to help – and the Red Box is one simple way to do that!
If you would like more information about the work of Χείρα Βοηθείας and/or would like to get involved, email us on [email protected]

Lifelong Learning in Apokoronas
Classes at the Municipality of Apokoronas’ Centre for Life-Long Learning are set to begin.

A Somateio is born!
Yesterday (Tuesday 17th June 2014), the General Assembly of the new Somateio «Χείρα Βοηθείας» met at the Marouvas Taverna in Vamos. It was the Inaugural Meeting to discuss and finalise the Constitution and sign the forms as the Founding Members.
We are publishing the Constitution below. We have been greatly assisted in its final formulation by Ms. Christianna Tsigagloglou, a lawyer from Chania who has agreed to oversee the legal procedures involved in establishing Χείρα Βοηθείας as a Somateio or official Philanthropic Organisation here in Greece.
The next step is for Ms. Tsigagloglou to lodge our papers with the Court to get their official stamp of approval. She will also see to it that Χείρα Βοηθείας is registered as a charity with Nomos of Chania.
The founding members discussed various aspects of the Constitution. It was agreed that we should aim for as little formality as possible in the organisation. Our priority is to develop further our ability to involve people in the work of Χείρα Βοηθείας whether it is packing the bags, collecting the donated food from the Red Boxes, Sponsoring A Food Bag or any or all of the many things that result in our 6 weekly distributions. So we want to avoid votes, elections and offices like President etc. We all know how easy it is for organisations to get distracted by such things instead of being able to concentrate on the work.
It was emphasised that involvement in the work of the Steering Group is open to everyone – no need to get elected, just volunteer to help!
The law (Article 80 of the Greek Civil Code for those interested!) requires us to have 20 Founding Members. We managed to capture most of them on camera. Those unable to be present are also listed. We have tried to get a good geographical spread so you can always find one if you want information or to get involved. The 20 are, of course, not an exclusive group. It is just the start! We know there are many more of you out there! Please get in touch.
As you would expect, it was not long before Fund-raising was being discussed. August 7th in Georgioupolis Square with Carl Axon and the Rockin’ Rebels headlining after a display of traditional Greek Music and Dance – that is our next big event. Your help and attendance would be great!
We also need to push on with the Sponsor A Bag scheme to give our finances some semblance of stability and predictability.
Also looking ahead, the Steering Group has written to the Mayor-Elect Mr. Charalambos Koukianakis who will take office in September to request a conversation about the continuing support for Χείρα Βοηθείας from the new Municipal Administration. Mr. Koukianakis was enthusiastic about such a meeting and it will take place next week.
Unfortunately, despite press statements to the contrary, the economic and social crisis here in Greece shows no sign of being at an end as far as our fellow residents are concerned. Our lists now contain 256 families with more than 400 children who rely on our / your support. We must face this challenge together.

A Date for your Diary
Wednesday was Distribution Day for Χείρα Βοηθείας. The Social Services Department of the Municipality as usual provided the administrative support. From 9am, Community Representatives from villages across Apokoronas arrived to fetch the food bags for the families in need in their local community. The Municipality’s Boetheia Sto Spiti (Armenoi) and the Boetheia Sto Spiti programme of Agia Sofia loaded their vehicles took the bulk of the bags to deliver in the course of their regular visits.
It was a very smooth operation again underlining the great co-operation we have built between the volunteers of Χείρα Βοηθείας, the professionals, the Community Representatives and the Municipality.
All together, we can make a difference!
“I would like to thank all those who supported me with their vote and gave me the fourth position (in number of votes) in the prefecture of Vamos. Although we were not the party to be elected first on the second Sunday, nevertheless I wish all elected candidates and the new Mayor to have the ability to serve with honour and persistence all the residents of Apokoronas. We must all take part and help the Council to move forward by working in unity.
All the best for the Apokoronas area.”

It's Χείρα Βοηθείας' Packing Day!
Today, Tuesday, the Packing Team gathered at the Food Bank in Nippos. We arrived early to prepare for the delivery of the food and other essential items. It was an experiment to see whether it was possible to combine the delivery of the food with packing the 256 bags ready for distribution starting tomorrow.
The Steering Group has always honoured the principle of buying the things we need at the lowest price. This has meant Lidl’s. That is until now… On reading about the work of Χείρα Βοηθείας, Aki’s Supermarket in Vrysses expressed an interest in competing for the contract. This they have done successfully. AND they delivered everything directly to the food bank. They unloaded their wagon and made sure every detail of the order was correct. The whole operation was very smooth. It saved us a huge effort and brought us ever closer to the Greek Community.
Once the tables and shelves were filled, the packing of the food bags began. We were joined in the work by Evi and the ladies of the Women’s Syllogos of Nippos. This is further evidence of the fact that Χείρα Βοηθείας is sending down deep roots into the ground of Apokoronas, already fertile with its traditions of social solidarity. The packing was steady and brilliantly organised. Soon we were struggling to find floor space!
With the last bags complete – 61 large bags for families with 3 or 4 children, 90 medium sized bags for families with 1 or 2 children and 105 small bags for couples or single people living on their own – we were hot but exhilarated by our achievement. All those involved in giving money through the Sponsor a Bag Scheme or helping to raise money by attending our events, all those who encourage their organisations and groups to make donations to Χείρα Βοηθείας and all those buying an extra item for the Red Boxes and all those regularly emptying them - all can share the satisfaction of “doing our bit” to support not only parents and senior citizens in need, but also around 400 children, who are the most vulnerable in our community.
The deepening connection Χείρα Βοηθείας is making with the wider Greek community augurs well for the future. Recent contact has been made with an hotelier in Kavros with whom we are discussing the supply of food. In recent visits to the villages of Apokoronas, I have been struck by the warmth of people’s feelings towards Χείρα Βοηθείας. The challenge is to build on these first contacts and find ways of turning this empathy into practical forms of support. The same is true of the village priests, several of whom have publicly praised our work. We have the examples of charity football matches in Embrosneros and Vamos where fans brought food instead of buying a match ticket. Can you help us build on them?
Fittingly, our morning’s work packing was rounded off by an invitation by the Women’s Syllogos of Nippos to drink coffee and eat cakes! The relaxed camaraderie of the packing carried over easily into a social situation many of us have come to value.
The scope for the development of the work of Χείρα Βοηθείας is so great and so varied that you are asked to consider how you can get involved. Every 6 weeks we need almost 3,000€. Perhaps your group can help? On our way home we met a woman who is President of her village’s Syllogos. We talked about what we had been doing and she immediately responded with a request for a Red Box!
So all our energy is needed to take Χείρα Βοηθείας forward. Help us if you can!
If you would like to Sponsor A Bag or if you would like more information about how to get involved, please email us on [email protected]
Η ολοένα και πιο βαδιά σύνδεση που η Χείρα Βοηθείας κάνει με την ευρύτερη ελληνική κοινότητα προμηνύεται καλή για το μέλλον . Πρόσφατα έχει πραγματοποιηθεί επαφή με την ιδιοκτήτρια ένος ξενοδοχείου στον Καβρό με την οποία συζητάμε για την προμήθεια τροφίμων. Σε πρόσφατες επισκέψεις στα χωριά του Αποκόρωνα, εντυπώσιαστηκα από τη ζεστασιά των συναισθημάτων των ανθρώπων προς την Χείρα Βοηθείας. Η πρόκλησή μας είναι να αξιοποιήσουμε αυτές τις πρώτες επαφές και να βρούμε τρόπους να μετατρέψουμε αυτή τη συμπάθεια σε πρακτικές μορφές στήριξης. Το ίδιο ισχύει και για τους ιερείς του χωριού, αρκετοί από τους οποίους έχουν επαινέσει δημοσίως το έργο μας. Έχουμε τα παραδείγματα των φιλανθρωπικών αγώνων ποδοσφαίρου στον Εμβρόσνερο και στο Βάμο όπου οι οπαδοί έφεραν τρόφιμα αντί να αγοράσουν ένα εισιτήριο αγώνα. Μπορείς να μας βοηθήσεις να οικοδομήσουμε σε αυτά τα παραδείγματα;
Το δυναμικό για την ανάπτυξη των έργων της Χείρας Βοηθείας είναι τόσο μεγάλο και τόσο ποικίλο που θα σας ζητηθεί να εξετάσετε με ποιο τρόπο μπορείτε να συμμετάσχετε. Κάθε έξι (6) εβδομάδες χρειαζόμαστε περίπου 3.000 €. Ίσως η ομάδα σας μπορεί να μας βοηθήσει;
The team of Stamatis Sgourakis has successfully completed the first round of the Municipal Elections in first place. With all the votes counted, Stamatis has a lead of 262 votes. I polled 130 votes – about half of what was needed to win a seat on the Council. Never mind! The important thing was the success of the team. I would like to thank all those who sent me messages of support and encouragement and all those who gave me their vote.
Now we must turn our attention to the Second Round of the Election next Sunday May 25th. As you probably know, this is a straight choice between Stamatis Sgourakis of Apokoronas-Hope & Vision and Charalambos Koukianakis of EMAAK. All the issues of Village Representatives and individual candidates are now settled. Policies and track records now replace personalities.
Last night the full Apokoronas – Hope & Vision Team met in Vrysses to plan the campaign running up to Sunday. There was a clear determination to finish the job. Stamatis’ Programme in English and Greek is posted below.
Your help is needed now. Can you speak with your friends and neighbours who voted for Mihalis Flematakis or Frankias Troulakis? Their election campaigns are completed. They have done all they can for their policies and programmes. Can we persuade their voters to support Stamatis Sgourakis in the Second Round. There is considerable common ground.
One of our key strengths is the track record of many of the senior people on Stamatis’ list. Their success in applying for and securing EU Funding for the Georgioupolis Sewer, the water system, the village squares, the pedestrian underpasses on the E75 at Kavros – all these projects can be highlighted. Crucially, they must now be successfully completed. Who better to do that than those involved in the design and planning stages?
As regards the Municipality’s money, Stamatis’ list includes those responsible for managing Apokoronas’ finances over the last 4 years so effectively that of the 4.5 million euros of debt we inherited from the previous local councils, 3.5 million euros are repaid and the repayment scheme for the rest is in place.
Experience of leading and managing a Municipality the size and diversity of Apokoronas sets Stamatis Sgourakis, currently the President of the Council, apart.
If you can lend a hand, that will be great! Your most important contribution, of course, will be your vote!
Anything I can do to help, please ring me on 6943683064.
As further information emerges, I will pass it on.
Best wishes
Pete

Election Registration Complete
The day had started much earlier for many as the final places on the List were filled. The newly opened Campaign Office on the main street of Vrysses was a hive of activity. A newly installed internet connection was one centre of activity. The start of the distribution of a Summary Pamphlet of Stamatis Sgourakis’ Programme was another. Throughout the evening, candidates and supporters gathered, greeting and being greeted by pick-up drivers and passers-by.
The withdrawal, earlier in the day, of Manolis Nikoloudis from the Elections (due to his inability to attract sufficient candidates to his list) meant that some worthwhile candidates were once again available for a discussion! The magic number of 100 candidates – for both the Municipal Council itself and the increasingly important Community Councils – was reached. Just before 10pm we set off in convoy for Chania.
Tension mounted as the midnight deadline approached. The corridor to the Registration Office was barely passable. Illuminated by camera flashes, the scene was one of high excitement. Finally, Stamatis, with Marco (pictured above), our legal adviser who had guided us through the procedure, emerged from the crowd, papers held aloft. We were registered and ready for the real electioneering to start!
As you might expect, there was a serious need for relaxation, certainly by the leading members of the Coalition. The pressure had taken its toll. So, perfectly understandably, we withdrew to one of the fine open air tavernas for “a beer”. Nearly 2 hours later, the impromptu celebration of a great beginning to our election campaign came to an end.
Football for Food!
Pete Sheppard, on behalf of Χείρα Βοηθείας, thanked Mr. Lazaridis and the Teams and all those involved in the event. He said “This is yet another example of how we can all work together to support all those in need in Apokoronas”.
Good Friday's Street Market
"A bit disappointing"
The quality and freshness of the fruit and vegetables was of the usual very high standard. Excellent examples of the local produce of Apokoronas - raki, cheese etc were all available at excellent prices. The raffle with a goat and kid as the prize seemed to be going well! The rabbits could not have been fresher!!
Clearly it is going to require some thought if we are going to overcome the various obstacles of Government bureaucracy, a certain lack of enthusiasm on the part of producers and understandable reluctance on the part of shoppers to leave their shopping for the holidays until the very last minute.
As usual there are no quick fixes and no simple solutions. Σιγά σιγά! as they say!
Village Meetings and Stamatis Sgourakis
on Tour
We started in Plaka. Not surprisingly the attendance was excellent. Particularly, it turned out, in view of local residents’ concern about the loss of the Blue Flag and the general direction of “development” of the beach area on Almyrida. Everyone seemed fully aware of the role of the controversial Mr. Nikitas Paizis, the Village President, in these matters. People warmly welcomed our aim to replace him with Nikos Charokapakis, as part of Mr. Sgourakis’ plan to support the sustainable, environmentally friendly, tourist industry in the area. It was emphasised that the way the Greek Election System works means that a vote for Helen Peters (on the Koukianakis slate) means a vote for Nikitas Paizis. It was agreed that the choice could hardly be clearer.
A central theme of Stamatis Sgourakis’ campaign is the involvement of residents in setting local priorities. The mechanism is the Community Council and the Community Representatives. Local needs are many – potholes an important one. Stamatis wants these issues discussed locally, priority roads agreed, and community decisions fed through to the Municipal Council to be fitted into the Apokoronas-wide plan.
Meetings in Kalyves, Gavalohori and Kokkino Horio followed over the week. The message of involvement and participation was well received. There is a clear understanding that money is tight to the point of being non-existent. Apokoronas, as in many instances of central government decentralisation, acquired a huge increase in responsibilities under the Kallikratis Law, without receiving the necessary finance. Apokoronas receives roughly the same government funding that the previous small Municipalities (Georgioupolis, Vamos, Armenoi etc) each received!
Further meetings are planned both before and after Easter. Watch this space!
Each evening this week, Stamatis Sgourakis has led a group of supporters on what is called a Περιοδεία or tour of the villages of Apokoronas. Starting with a Kafeneion Meeting in Stamatis’ home village of Xirosterni, the group met residents, held conversations, answered questions, drank raki, held conversations, drank raki, answered questions, drank raki… On Monday we visited Xirosterni and Kefalas. On Tuesday a very large group, again led by Stamatis with current Councillors and Candidates, toured every kafeneion and shop in Vrysses, where the pattern was varied (a bit!) by the eating of chocolates at the ζαχαροπλαστείο. At every opportunity we presented Stamatis as our Mayoral Candidate to the residents we came across. Stamatis made speeches – short and to the point, answered questions and listened to residents’ concerns. We managed to generate an atmosphere of good-humoured politicking! After visiting Kalamitsi Amygdali, we finished our tour in Kalamitsi Alexandrou with an excellent informal meal.
Wednesday evening was a rest for people’s livers and we resumed on Thursday (after a brilliantly successful village meeting in Gavalohori) with a tour that started in the kafeneion under the tree in the centre of Armenoi, took us to the square in Nio Horio and culminated in a great finale in Stylos.
Friday was the day for a show of strength in Plaka – which promises to be the scene of an electoral fight of huge significance. More than 20 supporters descended on the plateia. From there we spent the evening in Gavalohori, where we were received very enthusiastically and treated to tsikoudia and all sorts of snacks.
The village meetings and the tours together produced a sort of fusion of political cultures. Both were very enjoyable and both involved people and provided opportunities to candidates and voters alike to get their points across. Meeting new people, communicating in a mixture of Greek and English, it was great.
I look forward to more of the same…
Monday in Kefalas
A quick note to tell that the next meeting about the local elections will be held in Kefalas on Monday April 14th at 6pm at the Meterizi Taverna [situated behind the Environment Study Centre].
Nearly 60 people have attended our village meetings this last week. The response has been extremely positive.
You are invited to come to hear me, Pete Sheppard, present the policies of our candidate for Mayor, Stamatis Sgourakis. There will be plenty of time for you to ask questions and air your concerns.
Current Councillors and Village Representatives supporting Mr. Sgourakis will be in attendance.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Best wishes
Pete
Χείρα Βοηθείας' Easter Distribution Underway
With the help of Vice-Mayor Petros Vagionakis, President of the Municipality's Social Services, we were delighted to have been able to include a special loaf of Easter bread [Πασχαλινό Τσουρέκι] for each of the 257 families.
Included in each bag was a leaflet wishing the recipients "Καλό Πάσχα!" from Χείρα Βοηθείας.
Consistent Support for
Getting Ready for Easter!
A leading member of the Women’s Syllogos of Nippos had provided a large quantity of lemons for distribution. We have ordered a loaf of Easter Bread for each family. Petros Vagionakis will pick it up on Saturday so we are ready for the distribution Monday.
Once again, we have over 250 food bags for distribution to all those in need as proof of the generosity of the people of Apokoronas! Thank you to everyone!
Χείρα Βοηθείας- 2 years' old
Nippos 2014
- a good time was had by all!
Nippos 2014 – last night, [Thursday] – was a great success. More than 120 people came to the Hippokoronion Taverna in Nippos to our annual Social Evening in aid of Χείρα Βοηθείας. As we have come to expect, we were treated to a fine array of food and free-flowing wine by our host, Pantelis Kaparoudakis.
The evening started with many people arriving early to secure their preferred table and seating. It was just as well that the organising group had preparations well in hand. Suzanne, with Joan and Jo, had done a fantastic job in arranging the 50-60 items for the multi-prize raffle. Tony had put up the Χείρα Βοηθείας banner. Joan was ready to take the tickets and sort out the money on the door.
As friends gathered and the wine was served, the Greek Musicians, Menios on bazuki and Tasos on guitar
got the evening off to a fine start with some traditional Greek music. As people arrived, they set the scene and created a great atmosphere with their music perfectly judged to fill the space without preventing conversation. They continued to provide background music throughout the meal.
Meanwhile raffle tickets had been purchased and people really gave full rein to their generosity. Many fine prizes had been collected, thanks to the support of local artists and craftspeople. After a short (!?) speech by Pete, just to remind us about the serious purpose behind the evening, the raffle was drawn. It took a bit of time to find the winners of the 50 or so prizes, but with perseverance Tony, Suzanne, Trish and Joan finally managed it!
Then it was time to dance. Moondog took the stage and for nearly two hours drew people – one of whom said she hadn’t danced for years! – to the dance floor.
Finally at 12.30pm we had to call a halt! Everyone seemed pleased with their evening and the organising group received many congratulations and thanks for their efforts. “Keep up the good work” or «Καλή δύναμη» as they say, was their parting message.
The event raised a magnificent 1191.00€ after expenses (the food & wine, the Bands).
Many thanks to Jørgan for his short photographic record of the event.
Stamatis Sgourakis launches “Apokoronas, Hope and Prosperity”
About 70 people packed into the Old School in Plaka, to hear Stamatis Sgourakis outline his ideas for the next 5 years in the development of Apokoronas. He began from the context of the social and economic crisis of Greece and the financial constraints this places upon the Municipality. In contrast to the often rash promises being made by other Mayoral Candidates, Mr. Sgourakis made it clear that he would make no promises without clearly stating where the money was coming from to pay for them.
A central theme of his speech was the need for our 32 communities to themselves develop plans and priorities for their villages. The residents themselves, he said, must be involved in deciding what needed to be done. That applied to potholes in the roads as much as to bigger projects. Where Community Councils had failed to include all sections of the community and involve everyone in making these plans for consideration by the Municipal Council (as they are required to do every year by law), these Community Councils must be changed – by making sure that Community Representatives who are elected in May, understand this.
Mr. Sgourakis used a question about the loss of the Blue Flag on Almyrida Beach to illustrate his point. As a result of Greek Bureaucracy, the beach was not under the control of the Municipal Council of Apokoronas. Instead a range of Government Agencies – mainly the Archaeological Authorities – have the responsibility. So it is not possible for the Municipal Council to stop many of the abuses. True, the Council had put a stop to the recent laying of decking which was threatening to engulf what remains of the beach still free of sunbeds. However, conforming with the laws of common sense and with the need to make sure the environment of the beach area is attractive and welcoming to visitors, is a matter first and foremost for the community. It is not a matter which can be left to the private businesses on their own. His message was clear. If you don’t like the action or inaction of the Community Council, replace it.
Mr. Sgourakis did make one promise – to maintain dialogue and consultation with residents up to and beyond the elections. He invited those present to consider offering themselves as candidates on his list for Community Representatives in their villages. He made clear his commitment to the grassroots renewal of residents’ involvement to shape Apokoronas’ future. He was obviously keen to harness the knowledge, skills and experience of all our people.
In fact he explicitly rejected the notion put forward by Mr. Koukianakis, one of the other 6 candidates, of appointing a Vice-Mayor for Foreigners with a separate office to deal with “our” problems.
Stamatis Sgourakis’ vision is different. He stated that his Municipality will include everyone - every municipal service must address the problems and needs of all the residents. People from other countries, living in Apokoronas, do not want special treatment. They want equal and fair treatment alongside their Greek neighbours.
The 70 or so people attending were enthusiastic in their reception for the Candidates introduced to them by Mr. Sgourakis - a mixture of experienced Vice-Mayors and Councillors from the current administration and some fresh faces to give a rounded list, ready to take on the challenges facing Apokoronas.
The meeting concluded with light refreshments so that people could continue to ask questions and discuss issues with Mr. Sgourakis and the other candidates.
Congratulations!

GefyraTheBridge will support Stamatis Sgourakis
for Mayor of Apokoronas
Now in March 2014 we are again looking forward to Municipal Elections. After careful consideration and, in several cases, lengthy discussions with each of the major candidates for Mayor of Apokoronas, we have decided to continue our support for this grouping. Mr. Stamatis Sgourakis, currently the President of the Municipal Council, is our preferred candidate.
We believe Stamatis Sgourakis and his team are our best hope for Apokoronas at this time of economic and social crisis. There are no simple answers. There will be difficult choices. There is very little money. There will have to be priorities.
Mr. Sgourakis knows this. He has made it clear that he will make no promises without saying where the money will come from. He will not pretend that he can do everything residents would like.
We value his honesty and integrity.
Other candidates at the elections will promise, indeed they already are promising us whatever we ask for, to get our vote. That is a joke. They say that the EU will pay all our bills! That is a fantasy.
Another trick is to promise us a Vice-Mayor for Foreigners with an office just for our problems. We do not want special treatment for foreigners. That way lies division and competition. We want to be included and our voices listened to. Stamatis proposes a reinvigorated Migrant Inclusion Council and the continued development of the Citizen Service Centres (KEPs).
We want a municipality that includes all its residents, Greeks, people from other countries, women and men, young people and senior citizens.
GefyratheBridge has always worked hard to uphold the 3 principles we set out with:
· Accountability - politicians must do what they say and say what they do on our behalf.
· Transparency- residents must be informed and consulted.
· Equal Treatment for All - we are all in this together and it will require the ideas and energies of all
of us to improve the situation.
This is our yardstick to decide how we will vote.
We have chosen Apokoronas as our new home. We bring with us a wealth of experience and a wide range of skills and knowledge. We are working hard to be a part of the life of our villages and municipality. We are building positive relationships with our neighbours and fellow residents. We can be proud of the contributions we are making – to our local associations, to the community of Apokoronas, wherever we can.
People have worked hard to highlight environmental issues – re-cycling, fly-tipping, clean and safe beaches etc. Others have given their time and efforts to promote animal welfare. Others have supported the Municipality’s social services.
If we work together, if we participate in the life of Apokoronas we can make a difference. Certainly we owe our new home that much!

Stamatis Sgourakis declares his candidacy for Mayor of Apokoronas
More than 70 supporters and well-wishers packed into the Council Chamber in Vrysses on Wednesday evening to hear Mr. Sgourakis' statement of intention to contest the elections. His close colleagues from the current administration - Sifis Stavroulakis, Nikos Kokolakis, Petros Vagionakis, Stelios Mihelakis, Babis Koutsoupakis, Vangelis Zymvragoudakis, Manousos Kapridakis and many other Councillors and Community Representatives pledged their support for Mr. Sgourakis and expressed their confidence in his energy, integrity and experience to make the election campaign a success in May.
The meeting concluded with the selection of two committees – one to prepare the Election Programme, the other to set up the campaign machinery. The mood of those attending the meeting as they dispersed was one of confidence and determination.
A notable absentee from the gathering was Helen Peters. It is widely rumoured that she has switched her allegiance from the DEKA of Stamatis Sgourakis to EEMAK and Mr. Charalambos Koukianakis. It is not known why she has done this.

An Evening of Information & Ideas
The first step came last evening (Sunday) when a small group of supporters of Χείρα Βοηθείας were invited to a meal provided by the Cultural Association of Kournas. It was an important event arranged by Pater Mihaelis and the Municipality of Apokoronas to give us an opportunity to talk about our work. The event was hosted by the Community Representatives of Kournas and held in the village hall.
Before we had dinner – which included a very fine pilafi! – Pater Mihaelis welcomed us all. He warmly acknowledged the work of Χείρα Βοηθείας, collecting food and other essential items to be distributed to all those in need in Apokoronas. He expressed his hope that all those present would find ways to support the work.
Pete Sheppard spoke on behalf of Χείρα Βοηθείας. He emphasised the need for us to work together. He reminded those present that the Most Reverend Bishop Mr. Damaskinos, at the Blessing and Inauguration of Χείρα Βοηθείας, had urged everyone to work together to make the project a success.
Petros Vagionakis as the President of the Municipality’s Social Services reported with regret that the list of those in need is growing every month. This makes our job even more important and the need for co-operation between the Orthodox Church, the Municipality and Χείρα Βοηθείας vital.
Almost 60 people attended the event. As well as the President of the Municipal Council, Mr. Stamatis Sgourakis, there were representatives of Agia Sofia and the Municipal Social Services Department. In all we counted some 16 village priests from villages such as Pemonia, Asi Gonia, Kokkino Horio, Vrysses, Nippos and Kournas.
In his speech, Pete had spoken about the priests’ role as the spiritual leaders of the communities and had made some suggestions as to how they can help. This will need to be followed up.
After the formal speeches, we held conversations about future initiatives including an idea to support the children of families in need with their schooling. It was agreed to put together a meeting with Headteachers and school representatives to discuss how to take this forward.
Every participant took away a copy of the recent issue of the Bridge Newsletter devoted to the work of Χείρα Βοηθείας and our plans for 2014.
It was a most satisfying event. It combined the informal exchange of ideas with a more formal presentation of information and calls for co-operation and joint action.

A Busy Week for
On Wednesday we met to pack 254 food bags and this time we were assisted by the Ladies of the Nippos Syllagos. Their help was much appreciated and just over an hour later bags were packed enhanced with oil from the Syllagos of Fres and lemons from Izzy’s garden and very little was remaining on the shelves of the food store.
Then we had a wonderful surprise, we were all invited into the home of the Syllagos and served coffee and home-made cake, thoroughly enjoyed by us all and we send them all our thanks once again. And I send my thanks to everyone who has helped, not only this week but through all the different ways that has enabled us to respond in such a positive way, 254 bags filled with food essentials! Great effort!

Food and Football
- a great combination!
This is a wonderful response to what is a worsening situation. The Agia Sofia Foundation and the Municipality’s Boithia Sto Spiti Programme have put in great efforts to make sure the lists include all those in need in Apokoronas and that every village is covered. As a result, numbers of Food Bags needed have increased from 231 to 253. The shopping bill for the February distribution will be about €2,400.
That puts into context the importance of our fund-raising efforts like the Social Evening in Nippos on March 27th.

Χείρα Βοηθείας had been invited and we were honoured to receive our piece of the Cake directly from the Bishop in recognition of the efforts of us all to provide support to all those in need in Apokoronas through our food parcels.

Value for money?
“Some years ago we lived in Cheshire. Our house was old and was approached by a very short, rough, unmade track. One morning two men came to the door. ‘We’ve been surfacing some roads in the area and have some tarmac left over. Would you like to have your driveway done?’ I asked for details and the price and was assured that it would be a good job. I agreed and later, as we went out to do some shopping, a small tuck arrived.
We were astonished to return a few hours later to discover that they had finished. When they called later for their money, I paid up willingly and off they went – never to be seen again. It looked as if they’d done an excellent job.
It wasn’t much more than a week later that the weeds began to show through. It may have looked good, but it had no depth.
I am reminded of this story every time I drive over the Paleloni/Kefalas bypass and have to avoid the potholes that are beginning to show after just a few months, regardless of the patching done to fill them!”
Editor’s Note:
We must identify the Contractor responsible. We need to find out about the penalty clauses in the contract. The Authority responsible for overseeing this project must take action to make sure the road is completed properly without ANY burden on the public purse. The Contractor’s Quality Assurance Mark may need to be called into question.
What do you think? What do our Candidates for Mayor in May think?

Epiphany : Blessing the Waters
In the centre of the icon of the Epiphany is Christ being baptized in the Jordan. He is standing in the water wearing a waistcloth, and with His right hand He is blessing the waters of the Jordan.
Today the Blessing of the Waters is in many places are conducted near open bodies of water. As a sign of blessing as Christ blessed the Jordan, holy water is poured into the body of water. An associated tradition has been the tossing of a cross into the water to be retrieved by young men who race to retrieve it. As the date is in early January and the waters are close to freezing, this is considered an honourable act and it is said that good health will be bestowed upon the home of the swimmer who is the first to reach the cross.

Football for Χείρα Βοηθείας!
It's a winner!
The lucky winner of the double-bed sized quilt was Tony with ticket number 7!
In the end 76 tickets were sold which raised a magnificent 380€ to buy food and other essential items for those in need in Apokoronas.
The Christmas Distribution is underway!
She had contacted the Community Representatives and other volunteers to come to take the food bags back to their respective villages. Staff of the programme «Βοήθεια Στο Σπίτι (Αρμένων)» again played a leading role.
Village representatives from Vafes, Gavalochori, Nippos, Embrosneros, Kokkino Chorio, Kournas/Kavros, Plaka, and Tsitzifes arrived in pick-ups, loaded up and went off to distribute the bags. «Βοήθεια Στο Σπίτι (Αρμένων)» and the Foundation «Αγια Σοφία» took the rest to distribute as part of their normal home visits. The few remaining bags are to be moved to the Town Hall in Vrysses to be collected from there for distribution.
It was a smooth operation. Those collecting the food expressed their gratitude, on behalf of their communities, to the supporters of Χείρα Βοηθείας for all your hard work.

Χείρα Βοηθείας packs for Christmas
Fetching and carrying for
Everything went like clockwork. The order was placed and confirmed. Jo, our leader on the shopping side had given, as a visual aid, to the Shop Manager, Dimitri, a bagful of the items we wanted with the quantities we needed for the 241 families we are supporting. Jo and Tony settled the bill and the van, the pick-up and the trailer were duly loaded.
Back in Nippos at the Food Bank, another group were ready to help unload and put everything in order for the packing operation tomorrow (Wednesday).
Happy Christmas, Χείρα Βοηθείας !
Christmas at the Workshop
Χείρα Βοηθείας at the Winter Fayre
We had been assigned an enviable pitch [thanks, Neisha!]. Building on our experience over the last 18 months the Χείρα Βοηθείας’ publicity machine was in top gear. A magnificent banner announced our presence and our purpose. A beautifully crafted display board [thanks, Kirsten and Jørgen!] caught the attention of those passing.
The Steering Group had recognised the need to improve the publicity about our work, the finances, the Sponsor a Food Bag Programme. So we had leaflets explaining who we are and describing the contents of the typical food bag. We had posters displaying our financial accounts – we even had receipts from our shopping expeditions! A fine assortment of photographs recorded the highlights of the last 18 months. Many people could be seen reading the Frequently Asked Questions [with answers!] presentation.
On hand were members of the Steering Group and the growing number of supporters, giving out leaflets (400 were distributed), answering questions, receiving donations and, crucially, securing more sponsorship pledges to fund the food bags.
One idea you might like to consider – we were given a donation by someone who had decided to give Χείρα Βοηθείας the money they would have spent on Christmas Cards!
After an exhausting day, the outcomes were 11 new sponsors – adding 215€ to the six-weekly income; we received 247.40€ in donations [not including all the pennies people gave us! – we will count them and let you know the result when we get a minute!]; the banner, posters, leaflets, the whole thing brought Χείρα Βοηθείας to the attention of a huge new group of people.
Pete Sheppard, member of the Steering Group, commented “Such success is the result of hard work by all our supporters. If we can continue to build a flexible organisation, open to new ideas, willing to try new things we can make a real difference to the families in need in Apokoronas. Finding 101 ways to involve people in our work – that is the way forward!”
Yannis Kouros
- in Vryses on his way from Imbros to Chania
Apokoronas welcomes Yannis Kouros
Vice-Mayor Manolis Nikoloudis spoke briefly about the Municipality’s keenness to promote a culture of sport and healthy activity not just for the body but also for the mind.
Yannis Kouros himself, evidently conscious of the very large number of school students and young people in his audience, gave a brief insight into his motivation for his marathon running, the need to keep on keeping on even when its hurts in order to achieve our goals not just for ourselves but for the future of Greece.
After a session of questions and answers with Mr. Kouros, the Mayor reminded us all of the event planned for tomorrow, Sunday. Yannis Kouros will run from the village of Imbros to the National Stadium in Chania. His route takes him through Vryses, to Agioi Pantes, Neo Chorio, Armenoi, Kalyves, Kalami, Souda and on to Chania – that’s about 90 kms! It is in aid of the Syllogos Συνάνθρωπος – the Orphanage in Chania. He encouraged everyone who can to turn out to line the streets. Many are planning to join Yannis running a short part of the way with him.
It is estimated that Yannis will arrive in Vryses between 10 am and 11.am (depending on the precise start time). Certainly many intended to turn out to wave and applaud a fantastic athlete. Maybe we will see you for coffee en route!

English Style Fish and Chip Suppers
Would you like to eat freshly cooked fish and chips in the comfort of someone’s home and help to raise money for Χείρα Βοηθείας and animal charities?
Once again Heather and David Welham are inviting us into their home for a three course meal including freshly cooked fish and chips (vegetarian alternative available!). All the money raised goes to charity. Over the last two years they have raised 1,800 euros for charities in Crete and this year the target is 1,000 euros to be divided equally between Χείρα Βοηθείας and animal charities.
David’s family ran a well-known fish and chip shop in Lowestoft and David is carrying on that tradition. We have been several times and always received a very warm welcome and an extremely tasty meal. Please support this enterprising couple!
As you will see from the information below you must book your place and if there is bad weather or a strike the fish supplies may not arrive! But believe me it will be worth waiting for!!!

- all packed and ready to go!
Volunteers (see bottom left!) had collected the food from Lidl the day before so we would be ready. Just a quick glance at the photos of the Food Bank before we packed shows the huge quantities they had shifted.
It had been a bit of a rush as we wanted to complete November’s distribution and still leave time for us to order, buy, fetch and pack the food and other essential items in time for Christmas. It never stops!
As a just reward for our efforts we recuperated over coffee (something stronger for some!) in the local kafeneion. It was the perfect combination of a social event with a serious purpose.
School's Out!
This is not Inland Tourism
- it is Environmental Vandalism!
Stones removed, retaining walls dislodged, and soil exposed to rain erosion. This wanton vandalism in a beautiful forest is plain to see. We take no pleasure in publishing the photographs for the record.
How could this happen? Everyone – residents and visitors – knows that the beautiful environment of Crete is the reason for much of the tourist industry. Its thoughtless destructionon is an attack on both the history and the future prosperity of the island.
All this is thanks to the Sfakia Extreme Trails Festival which took place on 4, 5 and 6 October 2013. The race was down the kalderimi, stones were cleared from the path, and piled up at the sides or in one case to actually obstruct the kaldermini. Bridges and ‘jumps’ were constructed. The plastic fencing they used lies abandoned as rubbish. Where the kalderimi makes sharp ‘zig-zags’, the bikers’ route left the kalderimi, and carved out steep dirt paths to cut the corners off. On these paths, the soil is no longer retained by plants and will soon become eroded because the flow of rain water will be faster over the exposed soil. Where the stone side-walls have been taken down, the kalderimi will be much more vulnerable to erosion from the rain over the winters.
All this has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of – wait for it – the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICh) and SylvaMED, an environmental EU agency whose job is to “promote the social uses of forests”!
The Municipality of Sfakia gives its blessing – presumably setting aside its pride and respect for the traditions and legacy of generations past and the working environment of generations to come. Then there is ANEK contributing a whacking 50% discount on ferry fares to encourage people to come and have fun destroying our place. Bravo, one and all!
As the beaches empty, the mountain trails remain popular. Green “inland” tourism has a vital part to play in the future prosperity of Crete. No-one has the right to risk that for a few quick euros.
The Organisers told us they hope the race will become a regular event. They hope for more and more competitors. We saw the damage they did this year…
We will be sending this Report and the photographs to the Sponsors of this environmental damage. We shall insist that they sponsor the re-instatement of the damaged sections and walls. We further require that they use their “influence” to assist the organizers of this event to find a more suitable venue.
If you feel strongly about this, please express your views to the following Agencies (and send us a copy for the website) using their email addresses.

More Support for
Χείρα Βοηθείας takes stock
It was agreed that we need to widen the involvement of supporters in our activities. Every opportunity must be taken to enable people to participate and to get first hand experience of what Χείρα Βοηθείας is trying to achieve. We must take more steps to avoid “doing everything ourselves”, because this will narrow our circle of supporters and leave us open to misunderstandings and misinformation.
The formal organisation of the Somateio will be investigated further before we commit the organisation to that direction, particularly in light of recent events. John will arrange a meeting with a lawyer who is prepared to act for Χείρα Βοηθείας without payment. She will advise us on the legal pros and cons of the somateio approach. Already Georgos Atsalakis has agreed to be our accountant on a pro bono basis.
Exploratory talks are taking place to bring the Steering Group back to full strength.
Some time was spent on reviewing our fund-raising efforts in 2013. The Group discussed what had gone well and what needed improvement. A thread running throughout was the recognition of the need to put much more effort into promoting Χείρα Βοηθείας, so that everyone appreciates the importance of the work and can see the results of all the effort.
One area of concern, which we had discussed before, was the need to take care that we do not try to “hoover up” as much money as possible. There has to be a limit. The people of Apokoronas are fantastically generous but there are many demands being made on their money! We have on several occasions discussed the possibility of co-ordinating with the charities operating in Apokoronas, to find a consensus about the intensity of fund-raising, so that needs can be met without (literally in our case!) beggaring our neighbours. By showing some constraint, Χείρα Βοηθείας can set an example and encourage such a dialogue.
We have set the timetable for the next distribution of food and essential items to the 241 families on the “list”:
Jo and John will put our order in on 2nd November. John will organise the fetching of the things to Nippos on November 12th.
We will pack the food bags at the Nippos Food Bank on Wednesday 13th November for distribution on the 14th and 15th.
Last time we were joined by some “new” packers who had not really been aware of the scale of the operation! It is an opportunity to for you to get involved. If you would like to join us, please ring Pete on 6943683064. Spaces are a bit limited – so let us know. If not this time, maybe next? The Packing will take place at 10.30 am to make it possible for those with other commitments early in the morning to participate. It takes about an hour or perhaps an hour and a half. This means we can have a coffee together afterwards in the kafeneion opposite!
If you have any comments, questions, concerns, or suggestions, please get in touch on [email protected]

Serenata Kriti
presents 500 euros to
The Blythe String Quartet had played three concerts - in Chania, Rethymnon and the Loutro Taverna here in Apokoronas - as part of Serenata Kriti’s Festival of Chamber Music Concerts in Crete. Everyone who had the privilege to attend these events was unanimous in their praise of the Quartet, featuring Lucy Curnow on violin, Peter Graham on violin, Dominic Moore on viola and Anita Melita Beryl on cello.
Moira, Serenata Kriti’s Concert Manager, has already begun negotiations to bring two tours to Crete in 2014. She told us that the project had caught the imagination of top musicians in London, all eager and willing to come and provide us with such memorable experiences.
So watch this space!
The Founding of the Albanian Syllogos
of Apokoronas
There had been a lot of preparatory work behind the scenes by Miltos Tsekouras (former Adviser to the Migrant Inclusion Council of Apokoronas) and Nikos Georgakis. The official paperwork had been gathered. Information had been given about exactly what a Syllogos is and how it could support the Albanian people living in Apokoronas and safeguard their interests.
As a legal entity, the Albanian Syllogos has the legal entitlement to have its problems and concerns brought officially to the attention of the Municipal Council to be resolved.
The first step was to seek candidates for the Council of the Syllogos. Nine people volunteered. They were elected unanimously. They then withdrew to elect the President, the Vice-President, the Secretary, the Treasurer and the Press Officer. Once these positions had been decided and the results announced, the hall was filled with great applause.
From the enthusiasm and from the expression on people’s faces, you got the distinct impression that those present were aware they had just done something of great significance. Indeed they had – they had set in motion the process of establishing the FIRST Albanian Syllogos in the whole of Greece!
Leonidas Limantzakis, the former Mayor of Vamos, welcomed the new Albanian Syllogos. He went on to say that, in the event of a victory for Mr. Koukianakis in the Municipal Elections in May 2014, the new Administration would give every support and encouragement to the Albanian Community and its new Syllogos, promising Municipal Council support to help solve their problems.
Pete Sheppard, the EU Representative on the Apokoronas Migrant Inclusion Council, congratulated the Albanian Community on their new Syllogos. He emphasized the need for all foreigners to share ideas and work together. Of immediate practical help to the Syllogos, he said, was Χείρα Βοηθείας – the Municipally-supported work to raise money to buy food and other essential items to support all those in need in Apokoronas. The new Albanian Syllogos could make sure that members of the Albanian Community in need could get support.
With his other hat, as Editor of GefyraTheBridge, he offered assistance in publicizing the new Syllogos and its work by providing it with its own webpage within the Gefyra website. He would work with Ardjan, the Syllogos’ Press Officer, to start a bi-lingual Albanian-Greek (English translations to follow!) page as soon as possible.
The Council Members of the Albanian Syllogos of Apokoronas are :

Secretary : ALEKOS HANI
Treasurer : ILIR GJINI
Press Officer : ARDJAN LUSHAJ

Χείρα Βοηθείας : Distribution of Food & Other Essentials
Aggeliki has sent us this photo record. It is an important reminder of what your generosity and hard work are for!
We received this message from Janelle
Serenata Kriti was a great success with 400 people attending the three concerts. We raised €4000. After expenses we have €1000 to give to charities, €500 to Red Cross and €500 to Helping Hands.
We are currently discussing arrangements with a quartet that is scheduled to come to Crete next May. We will be running with two festivals next year, in May and September. We would appreciate it if you could tell your members how thrilled we were that so many people attended the first Serenata Kriti and that we raised €1000 for charity.
Many thanks for your support,
Janelle
It is back to business –
Χείρα Βοηθείας prepares the next distribution of food!
The Georgioupolis Square Concert, the Stylos Fun Run, the Car Boot Sale, the Loutro Evening of Classical Music, the Embrosneros event ( a magnificent €1,250), the Sponsor A Bag Project (now standing at €475 every 6 weeks!) as well as some wonderful donations from the Toneel Drama Group (a whopping €1,000!), Cretan Island Estates and individual supporters – all this effort had been turned into food and essential items to be packed into 241 Food Bags for families in need in Apokoronas.
As usual the packing was a good-humoured affair, the inevitable glitches being met with swiftly improvised solutions!
You can see the result below.
The Blythe String Quartet plays Loutro
A Memorable Experience ...
Our Programme comprised the Haydn Quartet Opus 64 No.5, popularly known as “The Lark”, the Quatettsatz by Schubert and the Ravel Quartet.
There must have been 300 people who came to the Loutro Taverna in Agioi Pantes to enjoy this moment of high culture here in Apokoronas. The setting of the Loutro was perfect – the late afternoon sun dappling the still green-leaved trees- the quietude - apart from the occasional bird singing in participation with the music.
It is not often that we get the chance just to sit, to listen and allow the music to evoke feelings and thoughts – the decision to play without amplification was thoroughly justified by the intensity of the atmosphere which resulted.
A special thanks goes to all those involved in the planning and realisation of the Tour and, of course, to the players themselves for a most memorable experience!
The profits from the three concerts will be shared between the Chania Red Cross and Χείρα Βοηθείας.
If you were fortunate enough to attend and would like to send your comments about the concert, please do so to [email protected] If you have photographs of the event to share, please let us have them!
There is more information about Serenata Kriti here www.serenatakriti.wordpress.com . You can also follow them on Facebook by entering “Serenata Kriti”.

“What a treat to be presented with such accomplished musicians playing to such an appreciative audience! The programme was chosen well to appeal to all tastes. The setting was beautiful - outdoors under huge trees, but therein lay the problem. Sitting near the back I could hear little of the introductions and completely lost many nuances in the quieter passages. Although delightful, a better venue needs to be sought for next year - and there must be one with better acoustics (the theatre at Embrosneros, perhaps?) or is amplification a possibility? The final encore was accompanied by two owls, a cat and a dog - which must make a change from their usual concerts!
An enthusiastic “Thank you” to the musicians, Moira and the other organisers for a superb evening. They MUST return!”
Sue comments
“We were at Loutro last night to hear this wonderful string quartet. But, sadly we could barely hear them, and could not hear the speakers at all, it was very frustrating. However it was really good to have such apparently high quality classical musicians here in Apokoronas, so hopefully this will be the first of many such events, plus better acoustics or some form of amplification. The setting was good and a lovely atmosphere, so in spite of difficulties, we had a pretty good evening.
Thanks to the musicians and organisers.
All good wishes”
SPONSOR A FOOD BAG
for Χείρα Βοηθείας
While they turn their attention to buying the food and other essentials and getting the bags packed, we must lose no time in focusing on the next collection date of 16th October.
Already sponsors have come forward to build on our first total.
We now have 430 euros pledged for 16th October. Can you help?
Annual Car Boot Sale - another great success!
Χείρα Βοηθείας held its Annual Car Boot Sale on Sunday
Issie, with her usual determination, had assembled willing supporters to staff the stalls, organise the parking and generally get ready for the onslaught.
We were lucky with the weather - it was scorching hot in deep contrast with the storms of the day before! We even had a slight breeze off the sea to help us through. Next year we might try selling cold drinks!!
The traditional Raffle, the Pasta Game and the Bric-a-brac stalls along with the fees from the pitches brought in the magnificent sum of 980.15 euros.
Thanks to all who helped, to the Municipality for its support and, of course, to everyone who came and spent their money!

Community Council of Stylos defends the Koiliaris River
A RUN FOR HEALTH
"KOILIARIS 2013"
The races were in two categories, 6km and 10 km. Both routes started with great razzamataz and efficient organisation in Nio Chorio and ended to applause and great celebration in the village of Stylos.
168 people of all ages, shapes and sizes signed up for the 6km race. The pace was hot – and so was the weather. It wasn’t long before things settled down – in many cases to a brisk (or in some cases not so brisk) walk as the demands of the body caught up with the extravagant imaginings of the mind. And my feet hurt! We didn’t meet up with the 100 participants in the 10km race until they sped past us in the closing straight!!
Arrival in Stylos was heralded by the Master of Ceremonies who had sent us on our way in Nio Horio. Having moved the entire admin operation to the Finish Line, the organizers were able to welcome each competitor by name and in our cases by mention of Χείρα Βοηθείας. We were given our places and times (107th - not bad, 57 minutes and 56 seconds - could do better! Will train for next year – that’s what I said to myself last year!
We had been looked after all the way by Red Cross Volunteers, by volunteers showing us the route and by strategically placed water stations. More water – Samaria, of course! – greeted us at the Finish. Then fully (?) revived, we proceeded to the Kerasma (Treats) provided by the Community Council and Syllogos of Stylos, picking up our Diplomas on the way.
After a suitable period of “refreshment” – lemonade for some, though I did see cold beers being greedily consumed, we moved onto to the Presentation of Cups and Winners’ T-Shirts. Local Dignatories, including Mayor Grigoris Markakis, Vice-Mayors Manolis Haritakis and Petros Vagionakis, made the presentations and the representative of the Chania Orphanage and myself on behalf of Χείρα Βοηθείας (the two organisations to benefit from the money raised) were given the honour of being part of the Presentation Group.
The party was getting under way as we left for a hot foot bath, to dream of what might have been! Maybe next year …
The Fun Runs brought our week-end of Fund-Raising to a close with a sum of €580 to add to the Georgioupolis money to make a grand total of everyone’s efforts a magnificent €2,900.52!
Well Done, everyone!
Χείρα Βοηθείας’ Record-Breaking Fund-Raiser in words and pictures!
Collection Raised €2,320.52 !
Teams had been hard at work distributing posters and leaflets in English, Greek, Russian and German making sure visitors to Apokoronas as well as local residents knew about the event.
As always the practical support and assistance of the Municipality in the form of Vice-Mayors Manolis Nikoloudis and Petros Vagionakis, Councillors Sifis Stavroulakis, Nikos Kokolakis and Pantelis Kaparoudakis ensured our efforts were a success.
The evening’s entertainment began with traditional Cretan music, dancing and singing – Γιώργος Ρεθεμιώτακης (λύρα / lyre), Μανώλης Μπαλωμενάκης (λαούτο / lute) and Μανώλης Περκολαράκης (λαούτο / lute) set the tone with some wonderful playing. Soon there followed traditional dancing beautifully presented by what must the junior section of the Akrites dance troupe. This section culminated in dances performed by their older colleagues.
This celebration of the traditional Cretan art forms was crowned by a moving song from Pantelis Kaparoudakis relating an old story (if not the old story!) about a beautiful young women dressed all in gold on a white horse.
The finale was an invitation by Γιώργος for the audience to show off their Greek dancing skills. (This needs more work on our part!!).
The logistics worked smoothly and soon Dog Pound Blues had taken to the stage and Chrissie and the band were belting out their distinctive brand of rock and roll. They had a large part of the audience on their feet. A special surprise was the guest appearance of Carl Axon to put the finishing touch to a rousing session.
Throughout the evening, Χείρα Βοηθείας volunteers moved through the crowd shaking their tins. It might have seemed a bit slow at the time but when the tins were opened and the takings added up, the real level of people’s generosity in support of all those in need in Apokoronas, because of the economic crisis, was clear – Maria, Sue, Ann, Kirsten, Jo, Bob, Keir, Jill, Trish, Chris, Ann, Ian and Tony – together had collected a magnificent €2,320.52 !
Jørgan recorded the event and we have posted his pictures below.
A Big Thankyou to everyone who helped – there were so many who did their bit! Often a word of encouragement is enough to keep us hard at work.
And now we are off to the Races…
Xirosterni celebrates a famous son
People gathered first in the small square beside the old wells of Xirosterni for the unveiling of a magnificent ‘bas relief’ in bronze showing the seated musician playing his lyre (worth a visit!). The unveiling was preceded by speeches, and accompanied by a musical ensemble – a brief taster of what was to come! It was accompanied by a burst of enthusiastic applause by the crowd. Members of Harilaos’s family, including from the U.S.A., paid warm personal tributes to him and were presented with beautiful glass plaques commemorating the event.
The crowd then moved en masse a hundred yards along the road to the venue for the feast and concert. Every seat was soon taken at the numerous long tables and people spilled on to the surrounding walls and paved areas setting up their own impromptu ‘tables’. These did not go overlooked when it came to distributing the, by this time very welcome, bottles of water, raki and wine!
The evening was just beginning and we were treated to an amazing series of ‘acts’ on the stage: musical ensembles, including many lyre players, an interlude of ‘mantinades’ sung in traditional attire - powerful unaccompanied voices filling the air, and phenomenal displays of traditional Cretan dancing by troupes from Australia and Crete. It was not long before members of the audience were joining in!
The atmosphere was electric with the intense rhythms of the music and dancing and the buzz of the crowd enjoying a delicious feast of salads, lamb and pilaffi, rounded off with delicious honey-coated balls. It was well past eleven when we took our leave of the Xirosterni family with whom we’d shared the evening, but things looked nowhere near drawing to a close! Well done Xirosterni, thank you for a memorable evening!
Greater Protection from fire - gets nearer!
The gathering was introduced by several short speeches welcoming us. The consistent theme was the need for the community of Apokoronas to pull together to find our own solutions to our problems. There seemed a well-founded scepticism about the ability and/or willingness of the central Greek Government in Athens to help us.
The Apokoronas Group of Emergency Volunteers with the help of the Municipality and the Cultural Associations of Apokoronas had organised a very smooth operation.
We were entertained throughout the evening by a brilliant array of musicians from the Traditional Association of Apokoronas Musicians «ΧΑΡΙΛΑΟΣ» who took it in turns to show off their skills. A troupe of very young dancers set the highest standard of dancing for the evening.
The Entrance Fee came with the promise of a “Full Menu”. By midnight we were the ones who were full – starting slowly with tzatziki, cheese, salad, lamb then some more lamb, then a bit more lamb, we were finished off by bowls of steaming hot pilafi. Wine and beer flowed seemingly without end.
The Maitre’d (whose name I didn’t get – apologies!) did a fantastic job and marshaled his waiters with great skill. No-one went without for very long!
The impressive turn-out included quite a number of residents from other countries (Nippos was particularly well represented in this regard!) – illustrating the theme of the event that “Together, we can!”
Every picture is worth a lot of words. Thanks to Jørgan we have a slide show which tells the story of the evening more eloquently than I can!

The Contribution is dramatic as well!
Yesterday (Friday) Χείρα Βοηθείας received this message from Peter
“I am delighted to write to you in my capacity of the current chairperson of the Toneel Drama Group to tell you that our members today voted that we should contribute a further sum of €800 to your cause.
We have had a really successful production and are really pleased that we can put that success to such good use. Hopefully this contribution will go a little way to meeting the funds required to for you to continue your excellent work in supporting the less fortunate members of the community in which we all live.”
Pete Sheppard, speaking on behalf of Χείρα Βοηθείας, added:
“This is fantastic! After we had to cancel this month’s concert we faced a financial problem. This contribution comes at exactly the right moment. Our Procurement Team are already gearing up for the distribution in August around the major Greek Orthodox festival of the Assumption of Mary and her reunion with her son, Jesus Christ on the 15th.
We were further heartened in our difficulties by an anonymous donation of €500 and another one of €40. Our community continues to pull together and will become stronger in the process to face the many challenges ahead”

Greek Language Students Gather...
More than 100 people completed application forms. Almost 90 have been placed in the appropriate Class. Others have chosen to wait for classes in September.
There will be 6 classes each of 3 hours duration and they will run twice a week.
The Administrator, Mr Manolis Vestakis and his team of teachers have worked hard over the last 10 days to get the classes organised. The classes have proved to be so popular that Vice-Mayor Michelakis approached the Headteacher of the High School on Vamos to support the programme with accommodation. This has been readily agreed.
No sooner have we started these courses than there is talk of extending the Municipality’s plan for a Lifelong Learning Programme ! This we hope will include a course in Greek Cookery. Watch this space!
Erotocritos in Embrosneros
The musicians also sang many of the verses of the poem.
Mayor Grigoris Markakis welcomed us. Organisers thanked the Mayor, Mr. Manolis Nikoloudis,Vice-Mayor responsible for Cultural Affairs and the Municipal Council for their support, including for the technical help they had provided.
In front of an audience of several hundred spectators, the cast brought the story of Erotocritos and Aretousa to life. The setting, in the amphitheatre of Kremastos at Embrosneros, the sky aglow with the setting sun in the cool of the evening, added to the performance.
Congratulations were showered on all those who had worked so hard to entertain us.
We are pleased to present this short slide show of the performance. Thanks go to Babis Koutsoupakis for the photographs.
More determined than ever!
Altogether 227 families will receive support. This includes more than 300 children. The Procurement Team, responsible for making sure that the supplies collected using the Red Boxes are augmented by buying food, had spent almost €3,000 this time. This has severely depleted the reserves!
The forced cancellation of the Carl Axon Concert at the end of June has made the task even harder. Nevertheless, the active supporters of Χείρα Βοηθείας are determined to re-double their efforts to ensure that the Musical Evening in Georgioupolis Square on Saturday August 3rd is a huge success. Already Dog Pound Blues have agreed to play.
Another fantastic reaction to the financial challenge! The Χείρα Βοηθείας team have been contacted by supporters including some currently in England asking for details of the charity’s Bank Account so they can make financial donations direct into our coffers!
At present, we can donate money by internet transfer to this account or we can take our donations in cash directly to the National Bank in Vrysses or anywhere!
This is the information you will need: –
Bank Name: The National Bank of Greece
Bank Address: Vrysses

SWIFT-BIC: ETHNGRAA
Please email us on [email protected] to make sure we can track your donation. And Thank you!
After a pretty difficult week, the sight of the packed food parcels and the emails pledging support in the face of our difficulties is an inspiration to all involved!
Carl Axon Concert Cancelled
“It is with regret that I have to inform you that we have decided to cancel the Carl Axon Concert on the 29th June.
This is for reasons beyond our control. Tickets are being withdrawn and money returned.
I want to thank all those for the work they have put into this event
The loss of urgently needed funds to buy food and other essential items for all those in need in Apokoronas (including more than 300 children) is a terrible shame.
Nevertheless I want to reassure the community of Apokoronas that the active members of the Steering Group will redouble our efforts to make our Summer Fund-raising events even more successful. That will be our response to the situation we find ourselves in.
The next distribution scheduled for Tuesday 18th June is being prepared. We have had to spend over €2,900 this time as the list of families in need in Apokoronas continues to grow. This makes the above cancellation even more of a blow. We really must find ways of avoiding such problems in the future. This will be discussed at the next meeting of the Steering Group. One important step may be to consider the composition of the Steering Group to make sure we are harnessing all the positive energy that we have among our number.
We must gear up to make the Georgioupolis Square event on Saturday August 3rd and the Apokoronas Fun Run on August 4th tremendously successful to ensure we can fund the distribution for the August Festival on the 15th.
Onwards and upwards!”
A Theatrical Performance by the High School of Vrysses “Erotocritos”
A few words about the play ...
The "Erotokritos" the many lined narrative poem written by the poet Vitsentzos Kornaros around 1500-1600 and set in Ancient Athens, is the foremost achievement of our Modern Greek Literature.
This play addresses the pure amatory feeling of two young people, Erotokritos and Aretousa, a feeling above all that is "not appropriate”, since the social conditions of the time did not allow Erotokritos, the son of the Adviser to the King, to fall in love with and marry the princess.
So the two young people pass through many trials, such as conflicts with their loved ones, exile, imprisonment and even epic battles ˙ but friendship, a father’s love and innocent youthful love emerge unscathed from each battle.
Really what has greater power than love?
The rest you will see on the stage…
The music group of EPAL of Vrysses will participate. After the show, without payment, George Chairetis and Constantinos Skouloudis with their band will entertain us.

Αλήθεια τι έχει μεγαλύτερη δύναμη από την αγάπη;

Pete Sheppard, the EU Residents’ representative on the Migrant Inclusion Council of Apokoronas and Miltos Tsekouras, Adviser to the Council welcomed the would-be students. They introduced Manolis Vestakis who is the course provider.
Mr Vestakis outlined the programmes available. The Beginners’ Class (A1) and the Intermediate Class (A2) are both ready to start immediately. The Ministry has already defined the syllabus and provided the books and course materials.
These Courses are part of the European Union’s Lifelong Learning Programme and so are to some extent flexible to meet the needs of “more mature students”. Those present clearly understood the importance of the intensity of the lessons. They will be 3 hour sessions twice a week.
The exact timing and days of the week for both A1 and A2 will be agreed by teachers and students at the next meeting on THURSDAY 13th JUNE at 10 am at the former Town Hall in Vamos. Also at that meeting, students will complete a short painless Placement Test to make sure they go into the right class.
The Advanced Courses are still being prepared but you can get your name on the list now.
Already 58 Application Forms have been received! If you have missed out there is still time to apply for any of the courses. Despite their best efforts, the organisers admitted that the circulation list of the Anglican Church of St. Thomas, Avrio, Apokoronasourhome, the Cretan International Community and Gefyrathebridge, needs to be extended. Steps will be taken this week.
If you would like more information, email [email protected] or phone Pete Sheppard on 6943683064.
Χείρα Βοηθείας΄ Supporters Meet
The main item of discussion was to make the final preparations for the Musical Extravaganza Evening. That will take place on Saturday June 29th at 7.30 pm. at the Vamos High School featuring Carl Axon and the Rockin Rebels plus David Hartley.
Numbered tickets (€10 each) and posters were distributed. Volunteers agreed to ask shops and tavernas across Apokoronas to display the posters and sell the tickets.
Closer to the date, another team will put up posters in the areas of Vamos, Almyrida, Kalyves, Plaka, Gavalohori etc.
Vice-Mayor, Manolis Nikoloudis, reported that he had made arrangements for the necessary permits, the stage, the chairs and tables and of course the electrical supply!
The food – BBQ meats, a Chinese curry as well as vegetarian pitas – are all in hand. There will be a bar fully stocked with wine, beer and soft drinks.
Next item – and one that becomes more and more important – the MONEY. Around 40% of the food we need comes to us from the Red Boxes in the local shops. The rest we must buy. Currently we need to spend around €2,500 for each distribution (every 6 weeks). Our current reserves stand at just €5,700. The need to make the Carl Axon Concert a huge success was clear to all those present at the meeting!
The date for the next distribution is under discussion.
Lastly there was a brief conversation about the food items we distribute to all those in need in Apokoronas. There was agreement that we must review the list of things we put in each bag to maximise value for money and ensure the best possible nutritional benefits.
Again through the work of Vice-Mayor, Manolis Nikoloudis, it has been agreed that the events organised by or for the benefit of Χείρα Βοηθείας during the Summer will be included in the Municipality’s Summer Programme advertising campaign. This is vitally important as a further step to bringing Χείρα Βοηθείας and its work to the attention of the whole community of Apokoronas.

Apokoronas Farmers’ Market Stronger than ever!
The decision of the Municipality to hold the Farmers’ Market on Big Friday at the beginning of the Easter Holiday weekend was obviously a good one. There were crowds, traffic struggled to get through the village of Vrysses as people on foot, on motorbikes, in pick-ups and in cars made their way, full of anticipation, to the market and then fully laden with their purchases struggled back to the reviving “lemonade” at one of the village’s many kafeneions. The tables on the pavements were abuzz as friends met up with friends.
By announcing the date for the market much earlier, clashes with other events were avoided and the people came.
For the producers of locally grown salad, vegetables and fruit as well as the small businesses of Vrysses, the Municipality’s initiative is providing much needed support and encouragement to our local economy.
Easter Greeting from Grigoris Markakis,
Mayor of Apokoronas
gives us all optimism, love and hope.
Let us respond to the needs of the time for solidarity and cohesion
so that we preserve our society”
Solidarity is extended to the residents of Apokoronas
“We are doing what we can to support the vulnerable families in our Municipality. At this moment more than 200 families in Apokoronas are being supplied with all sorts of basic necessities which are collected thanks to people’s support”, say the members of Χείρα Βοηθείας, the voluntary organisation which has been formed in Apokoronas to face the crisis.
Yesterday in the Apokoronas Town Hall in Vrysses, there took place a lottery for a Television and the money collected has been given to meet the needs of Χείρα Βοηθείας.
As Pete Sheppard, a founder member of Χείρα Βοηθείας, stressed “At the moment more than 200 families are being helped by the aid we manage to collect. About 20% comes from the Red Boxes which we have placed in the mini-markets and supermarkets throughout Apokoronas where people can put pasta, rice, tinned goods – whatever long-life products they can. The rest is purchased with money from lotteries, donations and with the generosity of the people of Apokoronos. We are working hard and day by day we try to improve the situation in our Municipality.”
With the start of the tourist season, Χείρα Βοηθείας will start an initiative to approach the visitors to the Apokoronas area, to ask them to make a contribution. “We will prepare leaflets to put in the hotels in Almyrida, in Georgioupolis and in Kalyves to inform the visitors about how they can help. Also we will put on a public entertainment in the square of Georgioupolis, with traditional Cretan Music and an English Musical Band [Dog Pound Blues – Editor’s note], in an effort to strengthen our effort even further. In everything we do, the Municipality is an invaluable partner,” stressed Mr Sheppard.
The Municipality
“The initiative belonged to Χείρα Βοηθείας so they can collect money to buy the food we need. It went very well. The TV was a gift from Municipal Councillor Mr Sifis Stavroulakis,” mentioned Vice-Mayor Mr Petros Vagionakis.
As regards actions of solidarity in the Apokoronas area, Mr Vagionakis reported that “despite the difficulties we are facing, we continue to do what we can. Unfortunately we are in a bad situation where the needs, because of the economic crisis, continuously increase. However, we are a strong group, the people from other countries who live in Apokoronas, the Municipality, Voithia Sto Spiti and the Social Services, the Agia Sofia Foundation, the Parishes of Apokoronas and the shops that are willing to accept the Red Boxes in which the food from our fellow residents is collected.”
The winner of the lottery was Mrs. Eleni Frantzeskaki with ticket number 1093.
Migrant Inclusion Council Election Report
In the event, three candidates had put in their nominations. Chairing the meeting, Vice-Mayor Miichelakis welcomed us and invited the three candidates to make brief statements as to why they wished those present to vote for them. After thankfully brief speeches, the secret ballot was conducted. The successful candidate was Pete Sheppard.
Pete Sheppard, after his successful election, commented: “I want to thank those who encouraged me to be a candidate and those who came to vote. Also I want to thank those who sent in messages of support but couldn’t make it tonight. As I said to all those present, this is just the start. There will be plenty of work for all of us. Sitting on the Migrant Inclusion Council is just one way of helping to enhance the social cohesion of our Municipality. When the work begins in earnest I am sure we can rely on the unsuccessful candidates and their supporters to work alongside us.”
Important Message from

The sheer volume of food bears great testimony to the generosity of the people of Apokoronas. Many buy an extra item when they are shopping and put it in the Red Box in the shop. Many have supported our wonderfully successful fund-raising events. The result: you can see in our small slide show here.

Χείρα Βοηθείας Getting Ready for Easter
Tony Lane, a member, emphasised “This distribution cost more than €3,000. About 20% of the food was donated by the residents of Apokoronas using the Red Boxes we have placed in the shops all over the Municipality. The rest of the food we have to buy. Our fellow residents continue to be wonderfully generous.”
Vice-Mayor Petros Vagionakis, on behalf the Municipal Council, has pledged a loaf of Easter Bread for each family as one example of the support the Council is giving to Χείρα Βοηθείας.
Pete Sheppard, another member, said: “It is thanks to the generosity of our fellow residents and the hard work of our volunteers that this is possible. It is particularly important at this time of year that we should spare a thought for others less fortunate than ourselves. Look out for our fund-raising events and come along. They are always enjoyable and you will be supporting a good cause as well.
If you would like to know more about our work, please email [email protected] ”
Municipality supports those in need
Χείρα Βοηθείας gets ready for Easter
From the photographs you can get some idea of how we have used your financial support!!
Stacks of tinned milk, rice, pasta, flour, pulses, beans, tomato products, tinned fish, rusks, sugar, tinned meat and soap now await the volunteers who will pack the food parcels ready for distribution by staff of Boithia Sto Spiti and Agia Sofia to the more than 200 families on the Social Services list who are in need in Apokoronas.
At the latest meeting of Χείρα Βοηθείας last week, Vice-Mayor Petros Vagionakis pledged a donation on behalf of the Municipality of a loaf of Easter Bread for each family to be added to the food bags.
If you know someone in your village who you think might qualify to receive a food bag, you are urged to encourage and support them to contact Angeliki at the Social Services Office in Vrysses Town Hall – telephone 2825340314 – so they can get the help they need.

Apokoronas' Farmers' Market
Bigger - Yes! Better - Yes!
People we spoke to commented on the great improvement the Municipality has achieved over the first 12 months of the market’s operation.
Balloons and candy floss, coffee and souvlakia in the sunshine gave the market a really lively, friendly atmosphere.
Members of the Χείρα Βοηθείας team took the opportunity to promote the lottery to raise money to buy food for all those in need in Apokoronos. Ticket sales were good and it gave the group much needed publicity among the Greek Community.
After a bit of a shaky start, the Municipal Farmers’ Market has made a good start on the promotion of local products and with the support of the whole community will no doubt go from strength to strength.
We will do our best to bring you early notification of the date of the next one, so if you missed it this time we will hope to see you there!

FREE MAMMOGRAMS
All women aged 20 and over must have a mammogram, especially if there is a family history – a mother, sister, grandmother, aunt. It is ESSENTIAL that the doctor records it in the health register. It is available with an appointment FREE at any hospital.
You can also take a mammogram privately if they have an agreement with OGA. When you telephone in order to get an appointment at a private mammography clinic, ask them if they have an agreement with OGA so that you do not pay anything.

Regarding raising money for the new Kindergarten school. We started collecting for the special blackout curtains that they needed for the Siesta room where the children sleep. The school were able to find the funds for these, so our efforts changed to providing large non-slip rugs for the same room. We raised 300 euros and presented this to the school before Christmas. Today we donated 400euros to the Senior School in Vamos for Books. Further events are planned.
Please see the attached poster that we will be putting in Jon's the Butcher shop to thank people for their contributions. We would be grateful if you could include this information in your next newsletter.
Whilst we were at the school, the Headmaster spoke to us about an 'English Room' that they want to create. They already have a selection of English reference books that have been donated, and these are available in the school library for everyone in the Community to access. Over the next few weeks we will be talking to Sophia the English teacher about the posters, maps, pictures etc that she wants for the walls of this room. It would be great if we could ask for your help to source these.
Thank you for your help
Kind regards

Τhe Steering Group of Χείρα Βοηθείας has met
Early indications are that more than 100 tickets have already been sold! Members of the Steering Group agreed to make a final push over the next 7 days. So if you have not got your tickets yet phone Joan on 6947116766 or email her at [email protected]
As part of the continuing effort to involve all sections of community of Apokoronas, the Greek members of the Steering Group have organised a huge lottery with the winning prize of a 32 inch plasma television! Tickets are €1 each.
We reviewed the February Distribution. John reported that it was the best organised distribution so far and he thanked Angeliki from the Municipality’s Social Services Office and the staff of Agia Sofia and of Boethia Sto Spiti for their work.
The next distribution is scheduled for April 22nd and 23rd which is about 10 days before [Greek] Easter– the sheer volume of food parcels requiring 2 days to distribute!
Tony reported that we have €4,990 in the funds. This underlined the importance of making the Nippos Event and the Lottery a resounding success. The Steering Group expressed its confidence that the people of Apokoronas will continue to give us their support.
The day to day work of promoting the Red Boxes continues. They have been numbered and a notice attached to each with a list of the items of food we particularly need people to donate.
Several other ideas for fund-raising were discussed. More news about them soon!

EWWR 2012 - Surprise !
Hello all. I thought we had finished with the European Week for Waste Reduction but I was told by DEDISA this morning that in their position as regional organisers, they are nominating our efforts during EWWR2012 in November for a European Award! There are many phases to go through I guess before the EU makes its decision but I thought you might like to know that our efforts did not go un-noticed. Thank you all.
Do You Have Medication You No Longer Need?
They will be pleased to receive your unwanted medications.
The Clinic is open in the evening from 6pm.
The Clinic is in Romali – a side street on the left at the bottom of Sfakion. It is on the left almost at the end in a block flats. There is a bell to ring on the outside and the sign “MSF” on the window.
If the Clinic is closed, the Chemist on the right at the bottom of Sfakion (before Romali) will take your donations for MSF.
Thanks to Jacqueline Marie for this useful information

Epiphany falls on the twelfth day after Christmas, that is to say January 6th – last Sunday. Orthodox belief says that it was the day of the baptism of Jesus by John and that this is where the day's association with water arises.
In several local villages, there is a Blessing the Waters. The priest throws a large crucifix into the waters. Young men compete to retrieve it.
